Wyvern is a 60-foot (18 m) open sea sailing ship operated by Stavanger Maritime Museum. The ship was designed by Colin Archer on a commission from British-born Frederick Croft and was launched on 10 August 1897. She sailed under the German flag from 1909. The Norwegian newspaper editor Rolf Thommessen bought her in 1924 and renamed her Havfruen III (Mermaid III). This name was kept by the English owners, Anne and Terrence Carr, who acquired her in 1947 and sold her to Christian-Frederick Mattner in 1970--who renamed her to the original 'Wyvern'.She was contracted for sale to a Norwegian consortium for £ 50 000 //of which £30 000 is still owed// after having been hijacked from San Antonio Ibiza.

  • Wyvern est voilier à deux-mâts grée en ketch aurique de 18 m exploité par le musée maritime de Stavanger. Le navire a été construit en 1897 en Norvège, pour un négociant en bois britannique. En 1909, il passe sous pavillon allemand et change de nom : Le Tatjana. En 1924, il revient en Norvège après le rachat par un éditeur de presse norvégien qui le baptise Havfruen III. Vendu en 1934, à un couple de britannique, le navire change de pavillon et fait de nombreux voyages dans le monde. En 1970, le Havfruen III est acheté et restauré par un Britannique qui le rebaptise de son nom d'origine Wyvern. En 1978, le navire est à nouveau vendu. Après un imbroglio financier, il est profondément restauré et cédé au musée maritime de Stavanger en 1984, comme de navire-école pour représenter la ville de Stavenger. Il coule en mer Baltique en juillet 2013 lors des Tall Ships Races 2013. L'équipage est secouru, mais un des marins venu au secours se noie lors du naufrage. L'épave est renflouée et rapatrié à Stavanger en août 2013. Le Wyvern a repris son activité après la remise en état du navire, réalisée de 2013 à 2014, au Danemark. (fr)

In 1984, Wyvern was donated to the Stavanger Maritime Museum by local companies which had paid for her restoration. She sank in the Baltic Sea on 11 July 2013 during the 2013 Tall Ships' Race. The crew were rescued, but a member of a rescue team died during the accident. She was raised from the sea in August 2013 and returned to Stavanger.
