- Una rampa és un element arquitectònic que té la funcionalitat de circumvalar parcialment dos plans diferents, de manera que aquests posseeixin una diferència d'alçada relativa en un determinat espai. Sovint s'utilitzen per fer més accessibles dos o més plans que estan a alçades diferents, tot i que a vegades tenen una funció ben diferent quan s'introdueixen en el món dels esports. Esta rampa deriva del half-pipe habitual y su uso es muy común en los deportes extremos tales como el skate, BMX y el snowboard. La altura del vert suele ser de 10-14 pies, pero varía en función del deporte o nivel de la prueba. También se denomina así a la competición de half-pipe, una modalidad del skateboard. Esta competición es uno de los eventos estrella de los X-Games, siendo popularizada por skaters como el polifacético Tony Hawk, Bucky Lasek o Rune Glifberg, estos dos últimos múltiples ganadores del campeonato del mundo en esta modalidad.

Vert skating ramps can be made with 6 in (150 mm) to 1 ft (0.30 m) of vertical while vert skateboarding ramps are made with 2 ft (0.61 m) of vertical in order for the skateboard to launch straight up into the air. This vertical section makes it easier for the riders to take off and 'catch air' on a vert ramp rather than on a half-pipe. This is because the vert at the top causes the rider to naturally go straight up into the air instead of forward and off the ramp (as is the tendency on half-pipes that don't go vertically upwards).
