- Le tungag est une langue austronésienne, faisant partie des langues de Nouvelle-Irlande, plus précisément du groupement des langues Lavongai-Nalik. D'après le recensement de 2011, elle est parlée par environ 30 000 locuteurs, principalement sur l'île de Nouvelle-Hanovre (également appelée Lavongai) ainsi que sur les îles voisines, en particulier Tingwon et les îles occidentales de la lagune de Kavieng. Le mot tungag (parfois orthographié tungak) signifie "mon frère", et la langue est parfois également appelée : dang (terme qui veut dire "parler"), ainsi que encore lavangai, lavongai ou lovangai (suivant des orthographes différentes du nom de l'île principale). - Tungag, or Lavongai, is an Austronesian language of New Ireland Province, Papua New Guinea, localized , the native name of which is Lavongai. Since Lavongai is an Austronesian language, it follows several of the unique characteristics of these groups of language. Several examples is the specific form for the singular, dual, trial and plural tense, the clarity of knowing if the person spoken to is included or excluded in the dual, trial and plural tenses, and the defining of the possessive tense expressed by an ending added to the noun. However, unlike the languages spoken in Papua New Guinea, it has not adopted and mixed with other languages. It is spoken on the island of New Hanover and its neighboring islands. There are different dialects of the Lavongai language. The major difference between the language dialects is between the villages of the south coast and the villages from the western tip to the islands on the north coast. There are also smaller differences between villages, but it does not have a major effect on the communication between these villages. Its endangered level (according to Ethnalogue) is 5, which means it is a language used frequently, so there is no fear that it will be endangered, but is not considered the main language of New Guinea.
