Nato da un'agiata famiglia ebraica, ascesa allo status di casato aristocratico presso le autorità asburgiche, secondo quanto scritto da nell'introduzione al libro di Lec Unkempt Thoughts (Pensieri spettinati), lo scrittore si propose in gioventù come guida per molti intellettuali della mitteleuropa la cui esperienza culturale fu frenata in maniera inesorabile dal divampare della seconda guerra mondiale.Internato in un campo di concentramento in Germania, vi rimase fino al luglio del 1943 quando il campo fu sottoposto a esecuzioni di massa. Fuggito grazie al travestimento con una uniforme tedesca, riuscì a raggiungere Varsavia dove poté unirsi al movimento partigiano locale. Alla fine del conflitto poté riprendere la sua attività di scrittore, interrotta solo da un breve intermezzo dovuto ad un incarico diplomatico come addetto culturale presso l'ambasciata polacca a Vienna.Lec trascorse anche due anni in Israele. Volgens 's inleiding voor Lec's boek Onverzorgde Gedachten: Lec heeft het voor ons vreemde, opgejaagde, spookachtige leven als duizenden andere intellectuelen uit Midden-Europa geleid, hun ervaringen onuitwisbaar getekend door oorlog en revolutie. Aan het begin van de oorlog zat hij gevangen in een Nazikamp. Daar bleef hij tot juli 1943 toen het kamp via massavernietiging werd geliquideerd. Hij ontsnapte in een Duits uniform, slaagde erin Warschau te bereiken waar hij lid werd van de ondergrondse strijdkrachten. Na de oorlog ging hij door met schrijven, afgewisseld met kortdurende dienst als cultureel vertegenwoordiger bij de Poolse ambassade in Wenen. Ook heeft hij twee jaar in Israël doorgebracht. De ambassade was communistisch tijdens de Stalinische periode in Polen. Toen de diplomaten uitvoerig geselecteerd en gecontroleerd werden was Lec persofficier in Wenen.
