- Ein Schandmantel, auch Schandtonne und Spanischer Mantel genannt, war ein Strafinstrument ab dem 13. Jahrhundert. Die aus Holz gefertigten Mäntel, die mitunter innen mit Blech ausgelegt waren, wurden zum Vollzug von Ehrenstrafen eingesetzt. Die damit Bestraften hatten sich häufig des Waldfrevels oder der Prostitution schuldig gemacht. Wer ihn umgelegt bekam, durfte beschimpft, geohrfeigt und mit Unrat beworfen werden. Es verhielt sich also wie mit den Lästersteinen. Die Schandtonne enthielt teilweise am unteren Rand sowie an der Halsöffnung Gewichte, um die Pein des Delinquenten zu erhöhen, was jedoch nicht tödlich war. Im 19. Jahrhundert wurde der Schandmantel als Tötungsinstrument fehlinterpretiert: Als sogenannte „Eiserne Jungfrau“ sollen Henker mit den Schandmänteln Hinrichtungen vorgenommen haben. Dazu seien die Schandmäntel innen mit Dornen versehen gewesen. Wie der Rechtshistoriker Wolfgang Schild (Universität Bielefeld) nachweisen konnte, waren solche Eisernen Jungfrauen aus musealen Fundstücken zusammengesetzte Schaustücke. (de)
- A Schandmantel or Schandtonne (German, "coat of shame" or "barrel of shame"), sometimes also Spanish coat, is a torture device which came into use in the 13th century. Schandmantels were fashioned from wood and sometimes lined with sheet metal. Victims were made to wear this device in public where they would be insulted, humiliated and have rotten vegetables thrown at them. The Schandmantel was mostly used as punishment for poachers and prostitutes. The use of the Schandmantel was comparable to the Lästersteine (German) or schandstenen (Dutch), heavy stones weighing down from the neck. The Schandmantel was weighted along the lower rim and around the neck opening as a way of corporal punishment in addition to the severe public humiliation it posed. The 19th-century development of the iron maiden may have been a misinterpretation of the function of the Schandmantel. (en)

Przypominało odwrócone do góry nogami wiadro, w którego górnej części znajdował się otwór na głowę. Po bokach płaszcza malowano niekiedy sceny dotyczące popełnionego przestępstwa lub umieszczano obciążniki, by utrudnić skazańcowi ucieczkę. Za pomocą płaszcza hańby karano osoby popełniające drobne kradzieże oraz pijaków, hazardzistów, próżniaków i osoby wywołujące bójki. Karę tę stosował do XVIII wieku sąd miejski w Chojnie. (pl)
