- Sir William Rothenstein (29. ledna 1872 Bradford – 14. února 1945 Londýn) byl anglický malíř, grafik, návrhář a autor publikací o umění. Jeho dráha začala počátkem devadesátých let 20. století. Rothenstein pokračoval v umělecké činnosti až do své smrti v roce 1945. Věnoval se různým žánrům, nejen krajinomalbě ve Francii, ale také například zobrazení židovských synagog v Londýně. Nejznámější je zřejmě svou prací válečného umělce v obou světových válkách, portréty a populárními memoáry psanými ve třicátých letech dvacátého století. Více než dvě stě Rothensteinových portrétů slavných lidí je ve sbírce National Portrait Gallery v Londýně. Tate Gallery má také velkou sbírku jeho obrazů, tisků a kreseb. Rothenstein působil jako ředitel v Royal College of Art od roku 1920 do roku 1935. V roce 1931 byl vyznamenán za své služby umění. - Sir William Rothenstein (* 29. Januar 1872 in Bradford; † 14. Februar 1945 in London) war ein englischer Maler, Zeichner und Graphiker. Rothenstein entstammte einer im Textilhandel wohlhabend gewordenen Familie. Sein Vater Moritz Rothenstein war 1859 aus Hannover nach England eingewandert. William Rothenstein studierte an der Slade School of Art in London, wo Alphonse Legros ihn stark beeinflusste, später dann in Paris an der Académie Julian. In Paris traf er viele bedeutende Maler der Zeit, beeinflusst haben ihn vor allem James McNeill Whistler, Edgar Degas und Henri Fantin-Latour. Er wurde bekannt durch seine Porträtzeichnungen bekannter Zeitgenossen und war im Ersten Weltkrieg offizieller, im Zweiten Weltkrieg inoffizieller Kriegsmaler. Er war Mitglied der International Society of Sculptors, Painters and Gravers und im New English Art Club. 1906 schenkte sein Bradforder Mitbürger und Förderer Jacob Moser der Tate Gallery sein Gemälde Trauernde Juden, das sich noch heute in deren Bestand befindet. 1894, nach seiner Rückkehr aus Paris, war Rothenstein nach London gezogen, wo er von 1920 bis 1935 das Royal College of Art leitete und Künstler wie Jacob Epstein, Henry Moore und Paul Nash förderte. Er veröffentlichte mehrere Bücher, so English Portraits (1898) und die Autobiographie Men and Memories. 1912 war er der Gastgeber des bengalischen Künstlers Rabindranath Thakur und half diesem bei der Herausgabe eines Gedichtsbandes. 1931 wurde Rothenstein als Knight Bachelor geadelt. Er starb noch vor dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs auf Iles Farm, Far Oakbridge, Stroud, wo er seit über 30 Jahren lebte, nach anderen Quellen in London. Emerging during the early 1890s, Rothenstein continued to make art right up until his death. Though he covered many subjects – ranging from landscapes in France to representations of Jewish synagogues in London – he is perhaps best known for his work as a war artist in both world wars, his portraits, and his popular memoirs, written in the 1930s. More than two hundred of Rothenstein's portraits of famous people can be found in the National Portrait Gallery collection. The Tate Gallery also holds a large collection of his paintings, prints and drawings. Rothenstein served as Principal at the Royal College of Art from 1920 to 1935. He was knighted in 1931 for his services to art. In March 2015 'From Bradford to Benares: the Art of Sir William Rothenstein', the first major exhibition of Rothenstein's work for over forty years, opened at Bradford's Cartwright Hall Gallery, touring to the Ben Uri in London later that year.
