Als Richard Gordon hat Ostlere zahlreiche Romane, Drehbücher für Film und Fernsehen sowie populärgeschichtliche Berichte geschrieben, die vor allem die Medizin thematisieren. Er ist insbesondere bekannt für eine lange Reihe von humorvollen Arztromanen, beginnend mit Doctor in the House (1952) und den nachfolgenden Film-, Fernseh-, Radio- und Bühnenadaptionen. Gordon studierte am Selwyn College und dem St Bartholomew’s Hospital. Er arbeitete als Anästhesist am St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London und Nuffield Department in Oxford. Später war er als Chirurg auf einem Schiff und als Mitherausgeber des British Medical Journal tätig. Zusammen mit schrieb er ein Anästhsielehrbuch. 1952 beendete er seine ärztliche Laufbahn und widmete sich fortan hauptberuflich der schriftstellerischen Tätigkeit. Die frühen Doktor-Romane, die in dem fiktiven St. Swithin, einem Lehrkrankenhaus in London spielen, waren witzig und teilweise autobiografisch; die späteren Bücher zielen mehr auf erotische Aspekte. Die Romane waren in England als Penguin-Taschenbücher in den 1960er und 1970er Jahren und in Deutschland als rororo Taschenbücher (insbesondere als sog. Leinenrücken) von den 1950er bis 1960er Jahren sehr erfolgreich. Doctor in the House, bereits 1954 verfilmt (deutscher Titel: Aber, Herr Doktor…), wurde der erfolgreichste britische Film des Jahres. Der Autor spielte in einer namenlosen Rolle als Anästhesist mit, die Hauptrolle Dirk Bogarde, wie auch im nächsten Jahr bei Doctor at Sea (deutscher Titel: Doktor Ahoi!) mit Brigitte Bardot. Weitere Verfilmungen der Doktor-Serie folgten. Richard Gordon hat auch Artikel für die Zeitschrift Punch geschrieben und Bücher über das Gärtnern, Angeln und über Cricket veröffentlicht. Zu den zahlreichen anderen Büchern, die Gordon schrieb, gehört eine Biographie von Florence Nightingale (1978). Er verfasste auch ein Buch über Jack the Ripper (1980), in dem er argumentierte, dass der Serienmörder ähnlich wie er selbst nicht nur Arzt, sondern auch Anästhesist gewesen sein muss, da niemand Schreie der Opfer hörte und demnach Chloroform auf der Grundlage medizinischer Kenntnisse zum Einsatz gekommen sein müsse. - Richard Gordon (born Gordon Stanley Benton, 15 September 1921 – 11 August 2017, also known as Gordon Stanley Ostlere), was an English ship's surgeon and anaesthetist. As Richard Gordon, Ostlere wrote numerous novels, screenplays for film and television and accounts of popular history, mostly dealing with the practice of medicine. He was best known for a long series of comic novels on a medical theme beginning with Doctor in the House, and the subsequent film, television, radio and stage adaptations. His The Alarming History of Medicine was published in 1993, and he followed this with The Alarming History of Sex. Gordon was born in Paddington, London. He studied at Selwyn College, Cambridge, and worked as an anaesthetist at St. Bartholomew's Hospital (where he had been a medical student) and later as a ship's surgeon and as assistant editor of the British Medical Journal. He published several technical books under his own name, including Anaesthetics for Medical Students (1949), later published as Ostlere and Bryce-Smith's Anaesthetics for Medical Students in 1989; Anaesthetics and the Patient (1949), and Trichlorethylene Anaesthesia (1953)[1].He left medical practice in 1952, and took up writing full-time. The early Doctor novels, set in the fictitious St. Swithin's, a teaching hospital in London, were witty and apparently autobiographical; later books included more sexual innuendo and farce. The novels were successful in Britain in Penguin paperback during the 1960s and 1970s. Gordon also contributed articles to Punch magazine, and published books on medicine, gardening, fishing and cricket. The film adaptation of Doctor in the House (1954) was released two years after the book's publication. He had an uncredited role as an anaesthetist in the film. Doctor at Sea came out the following year, with Brigitte Bardot in the cast. Dirk Bogarde starred as Dr. Simon Sparrow in both. The later spin-off TV series were written by British comedy writers. In 1974, he walked off the set of This is Your Life when Eamonn Andrews appeared with the red book. He later changed his mind and the show was transmitted a week later. Gordon's wife Mary Ostlere was also a physician, and the couple had four children. He died on 11 August 2017. (en)
