- Das Ribblehead-Viadukt ist eine Eisenbahnbrücke über das Tal des Flusses Ribble am Fuße des Berges Whernside in der englischen Grafschaft North Yorkshire. Die Brücke wurde von 1870 bis 1874 nach Plänen von erbaut. Sie ist 32 Meter hoch, 402 Meter lang und wird von 24 Bögen in 4 Feldern getragen, die mit etwas stärkeren Pfeilern voneinander abgesetzt sind. Das Viadukt verläuft in einem leichten Bogen und ist daher auch aus den östlichen Fenstern des fahrenden Zuges heraus sichtbar. Es ist das längste Viadukt im Verlauf der Bahnstrecke Settle–Carlisle. Nachdem Pläne zur Stilllegung der Strecke nach Protesten aufgegeben wurden, wurde das Viadukt in den 1980er Jahren verkehrssicher gemacht. Seit 1985 ist es nur einspurig befahrbar. (de)
- The Ribblehead Viaduct or Batty Moss Viaduct carries the Settle–Carlisle railway across Batty Moss in the Ribble Valley at Ribblehead, in North Yorkshire, England. The viaduct, built by the Midland Railway, is 28 miles (45 km) north-west of Skipton and 26 miles (42 km) south-east of Kendal. It is a Grade II* listed structure. Ribblehead Viaduct is the longest and the third tallest structure on the Settle–Carlisle line. The viaduct was designed by , chief engineer of the Midland Railway, who was responsible for the design and construction of all major structures along the line. The viaduct was necessitated by the challenging terrain of the route. Construction began in late 1869. It necessitated a large workforce, up to 2,300 men, most of whom lived in shanty towns set up near its base. Over 100 men lost their lives during its construction. The Settle to Carlisle line was the last main railway in Britain to be constructed primarily with manual labour. By the end of 1874, the last stone of the structure had been laid; on 1 May 1876, the Settle–Carlisle line was opened for passenger services. During the 1980s, British Rail proposed closing the line. In 1989, after lobbying by the public against closure, it was announced that the line would be retained. Since the 1980s, the viaduct has had multiple repairs and restorations and the lines relaid as a single track. The land underneath and around the viaduct is a scheduled ancient monument; the remains of the construction camp and navvy settlements (Batty Wife Hole, Sebastopol, and Belgravia) are located there. - Het Ribblehead Viaduct is een Engels spoorwegviaduct in de vallei van de rivier de Ribble bij Ribblehead, in Noord-Yorkshire, Noord-Engeland. Het is het langste en beroemdste viaduct van de Settle & Carlisle Line, een spoorlijn die door dat spectaculaire Britse landschap loopt. Ribblehead station ligt minder dan een halve mijl (600 m) ten zuiden van het viaduct. Het viaduct werd ontworpen door de ingenieur John Sydney Crossley. De eerste steen werd gelegd op 12 oktober 1870 en de laatste in 1874. Het is 32 meter hoog en 402 meter lang. Het is opgebouwd uit vierentwintig bogen. Het is gelegen aan de voet van de berg van Whernside. Het viaduct heeft een flauwe bocht die kan worden gezien door de passagiers in de trein. De treinreis van Settle naar Carlisle is lang genoeg om een vakantieganger in Yorkshire Dales prachtige landschappen te laten zien. De Settle & Carlisle-lijn is een van de drie belangrijkste noord-zuid lijnen; samen met de West Coast Main Line via Penrith en de East Coast Main Line via Newcastle. British Rail deed een poging om de lijn te sluiten. Een latere gedeeltelijke oplossing was om een spoor te gebruiken op het viaduct. De eventuele sluitingsplannen veroorzaakten enorm protest en werden uiteindelijk ingetrokken.
