He is principally remembered for his pioneering role in the Gothic Revival style of architecture. His work culminated in designing the interior of the Palace of Westminster in Westminster, London, England, and its iconic clock tower, later renamed the Elizabeth Tower, which houses the bell known as Big Ben. Pugin designed many churches in England, and some in Ireland and Australia. He was the son of Auguste Pugin, and the father of Edward Welby Pugin and Peter Paul Pugin, who continued his architectural firm as Pugin & Pugin. Uma de suas frases diz que "está correto decorar a construção, mas jamais construa a decoração.” Prefigurados pelas obras puritanas e apocalípticas de Milton e Blake, o filósofo escocês Thomas Carlyle e o arquiteto inglês A.W.N. Pugin expuseram, cada um a seu modo, o descontentamento espiritual e cultural da segunda metade do século XIX. O primeiro era ateue alinhou-se conscientemente ao movimento cartista do fim da década de 1830; o segundo era católico convertido que pregava o retorno direto aos valores espirituais e às formas arquitetônicas da Idade Média. Han var son till och far till . Pugins far var en fransk arkitekt och tecknare som lärde sonen att teckna av gotiska kyrkor och arkitekturdetaljer. Pugin som konverterade till katolicismen kom att hävda gotiken som den enda sanna och rena kristna arkitekturen, särskilt lämpad för kyrkor. Han föraktade den klassiska arkitekturen som han menade var hednisk. Han skrev flera böcker i ämnet och hans betydelse sträcker sig därför längre än de byggnader han ritade genom att hans idéer och arkitekturtänkande spreds över världen. Bland dem han inspirerade märks John Ruskin och William Morris. Pugins tanke att varje detalj skulle ha ett särskilt syfte och att det inte får finnas något i en byggnad som inte är passande eller praktiskt motiverat och att all utsmyckning och ornamentik skall ha till uppgift att framhäva den bärande konstruktionen var idéer som gärna lyftes fram av funktionalisterna under 1900-talet. Som arkitekt är Pugin främst känd för sin medverkan vid bygget av Houses of Parliament i London (med Charles Barry). Kyrkan St Giles i Cheadle i Staffordshire är ett gott exempel på en av de omkring 40 kyrkor han utformade i England. En annan kyrka han ritade var St Chad's Cathedral i Birmingham. Han var son till och far till . Som arkitekt är Pugin främst känd för sin medverkan vid bygget av Houses of Parliament i London (med Charles Barry). Kyrkan St Giles i Cheadle i Staffordshire är ett gott exempel på en av de omkring 40 kyrkor han utformade i England. En annan kyrka han ritade var St Chad's Cathedral i Birmingham. (sv)
