- Poliziottesco ist ein Filmgenre aus Italien. Oft wird der Begriff auch im Plural, Poliziotteschi, verwendet. Häufig werden alle italienischen Filme mit Polizei-, Mafia- oder Gangsterbezug mit diesem Begriff beschrieben. Bei dem klassischen Poliziottesco handelt es sich um eine Unterart des Polizeifilms. Derartige Filme wurden zwischen 1968 und 1982 gedreht. Danach gab es kaum noch Produktionen, die zum Genre gezählt werden können. Als Erstlingswerk wird häufig der Film Das Syndikat von Stefano Vanzina genannt. Er behandelt die Problematik eines Polizisten, der im Alleingang gegen die Kriminalität ankämpft. Typisch für das Genre sind die Hilflosigkeit und das Desinteresse der staatlichen Organe, die die Haupthelden zu eigenmächtigen Handlungen bis zum Übergang zur Selbstjustiz zwingen. Der Regisseur Enzo G. Castellari konnte durch seine technisch anspruchsvolle Kameraführung in Filmen wie Tote Zeugen singen nicht überzeugen. - Le poliziottesco [polittsjotˈtesko] (au pluriel poliziotteschi [polittsjotˈteski]) ou le poliziesco all'italiana [politˈtsjesko allitaˈljana], parfois traduit néo-polar italien, polar-spaghetti ou polar bis italien, est un genre cinématographique italien en vogue dans les années de plomb, c'est-à-dire entre la fin des années 1960 et le début des années 1980. Sa thématique repose sur des enquêtes policières concernant la plupart du temps des faits divers de l’époque, celles-ci étant traitées sur un mode emphatique, démagogique ou comique. La différence stylistique entre le poliziottesco et le film noir réside dans la prédominance de l’action et de la violence, toutes deux plutôt exacerbées et explicites. En outre, le titre évoque plutôt des films où l’on parle de policiers et de leur goût pour la vengeance, plutôt que de films avec une fin rassurante où la loi a le dernier mot. Cette orientation est courante dans les néo-polars de l’époque. Le poliziottesco est donc un sous-genre fait d’un mélange de genres dit « adulte » : le film noir et le film d'horreur, souvent avec une touche non négligeable de gore (genre à son apogée en Italie à la fin des années 1960, illustré par des gialli comme ceux de Mario Bava) et le western spaghetti revisité dont les metteurs en scène et les acteurs sont les transfuges. Le milieu urbain est le décor principal, commun à tous ces films, et renvoie à une Italie où tout peut arriver. D’un autre côté, le poliziottesco doit beaucoup à la peinture de la société italienne portée à l’écran par des auteurs comme Damiano Damiani et Elio Petri. Au cours de son développement, le courant du néo-polar s’est mêlé à d’autres genres populaires. En particulier, très vite sont apparues les autoparodies, en créant ainsi un courant comico-grotesque. Il a pour figure emblématique Poubelle (Er Monnezza) interprété par Tomás Milián, qui est selon les films soit un personnage de délinquant (avec un bon fond) soit un commissaire balourd. (fr)

Influenced by both 1970s French crime films and gritty 1960s and 1970s American cop films and vigilante films, poliziotteschi films were made amidst an atmosphere of socio-political turmoil in Italy known as Years of Lead and increasing Italian crime rates. The films generally featured graphic and brutal violence, organized crime, car chases, vigilantism, heists, gunfights, and corruption up to the highest levels. Castellari's (ook bekend als High Crime en The Marseilles Connection) uit 1973, dat een gigantisch succes werd.
