- Necropolitics is the use of social and political power to dictate how some people may live and how some must die. The deployment of necropolitics creates what Achille Mbembe calls deathworlds, or "new and unique forms of social existence in which vast populations are subjected to living conditions that confer upon them the status of the living dead." Mbembe, author of On the Postcolony, was the first scholar to explore the term in depth in his 2003 article, and later, his 2019 book of the same name. Mbembe identifies racism as a prime driver of necropolitics, stating that racialized people's lives are systemically cheapened and habituated to loss. (en)

- La nécropolitique est un néologisme créé par le théoricien du post-colonialisme, politologue et historien camerounais Achille Mbembe. Il fait l’hypothèse que l’expression ultime de la souveraineté réside dans le pouvoir social et politique de décider qui pourra vivre et qui doit mourir. Le concept analyse la notion du biopouvoir de Michel Foucault, conçue pour expliquer la domination du corps et de la vie. C’est une notion insuffisante en tant qu’elle ne rend pas compte des formes contemporaines de soumission de la vie au pouvoir de la mort. - Nekropolitik är makten över död och i förlängningen liv. Begreppet har mest gjorts känt av den kamerunske filosofen Achille Mbembe som menar att död är frånvaron av ett meningsfullt liv. Nekropolitik blir på så vis skapandet av teser för vad som ska klassificeras som liv eller ej och hur människor ska leva alternativt dö. Denne exemplifierade bland annat utifrån slavliv under kolonialtiden där slavarna i egentlig mening var vare sig levande eller döda utan befann sig i ett fantomliknande tillstånd . Död som symbolvärde har också betonats av andra tänkare. I Sovjetunionen användes bland annat Lenins fysiska kropp som ett maktincitament där innehavaren av kroppen fick makt både över den kommunistiska ideologin som Sovjetunionen. (sv)
