Much of its collection was damaged or destroyed in a fire in January 2020. After being closed for more than a year following the fire, the museum reopened to the public on July 15, 2021. (en)

Didirikan pada tahun 1980 di Chinatown, Manhattan, New York City, museum ini merupakan suatu proyek yang dimulai oleh ahli sejarah John Kuo Wei Tchen dan masyarakat setempat dan aktivis Charles Lailand untuk mempromosikan pemahaman yang lebih baik mengenai sejarah masyarakat Tionghoa Amerika dan untuk mengungkapkan suatu kekhawatiran bahwa "kenangan dan pengalaman yang dimiliki oleh generasi tua akan hilang tanpa usaha untuk melestarikan sejarah tutur, dokumentasi, riset dan koleksi."
