Ein Teil auf der Westseite ist stillgelegt, der knapp 15 km lange Rest ist in Betrieb und wird hauptsächlich vom Fernverkehr und von Güterzügen befahren. Die Gürtelbahn wird auch von den Hochgeschwindigkeitszügen als Zugang von allen Landesteilen zum Bahnhof Milano Centrale genutzt. (de)
