- MASS (títol complet: "MASS: A Theatre Piece for Singers, Players and Dancers, és a dir, "Una obra de teatre per a cantants, músics i ballarins") és una obra de teatre musical composta per Leonard Bernstein amb text del mateix Bernstein i lletres i text addicional de Stephen Schwartz. Encarregada per Jacqueline Kennedy, es va estrenar el 8 de setembre de 1971, dirigida per Maurice Peress. L'actuació va formar par de la innauguració del Centre John F. Kennedy per a les Arts escèniques, a Washington DC Mass s'estrenà a Europa el 1973, amb John Mauceri dirigint la Yale Orquestra de Simfonia a Viena. Al principi, Bernstein pretenia compondre una missa tradicional, però en comptes d'això es decidí per una forma més innovadora. L'obra es basa en la Missa Tridentina de l'Església catòlica. Tot i que els passatges litúrgics són cantats en llatí, també s'hi inclouen textos addicionals en anglès escrits per Bernstein, el compositor de Broadway Stephen Schwartz, i Paul Simon (que va escriure el primer quartet del trop "Half of the People"). L'obra està pensada per ser escenificada teatralment, però també es pot interpretar en un concert estàndard. Mass: A Theatre Piece for Singers, Players and Dancers), je hudebně divadelní dílo amerického skladatele Leonarda Bernsteina. Text k ní napsal sám Bernstein spolu s libretistou a s využitím pasáží z římskokatolické mše. Jde o monumentální kus téměř dvouhodinové délky a vyžadující účast bezmála tří set interpretů. Premiérově byla uvedena v září 1971 při otevření Kennedyho centra ve Washingtonu. V Česku měla svou scénickou premiéru v srpnu 1997. (cs)

Commissioned by Jacqueline Kennedy, it premiered on September 8, 1971, conducted by Maurice Peress and choreographed by Alvin Ailey. The production used costume designs by Frank Thompson. The performance was part of the opening of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. Mass premiered in Europe in 1973, with John Mauceri conducting the Yale Symphony Orchestra in Vienna. The work is based on the Tridentine Mass of the Catholic Church. The liturgical passages are sung mostly in Latin, though the "Sanctus" includes portions in Hebrew. Mass also includes additional texts in English written by Bernstein, Broadway composer Stephen Schwartz, and Paul Simon (who wrote the first quatrain of the trope "Half of the People"). The work is intended to be staged theatrically, but it has also been performed in a standard concert setting. Initial critical reception, including a review in The New York Times, was largely negative, but the Columbia Records recording of the work enjoyed excellent sales. (en)
