- The Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) is an international center for research and education in biological and environmental science. Founded in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, in 1888, the MBL is a private, nonprofit institution that was independent for most of its history, but became officially affiliated with the University of Chicago on July 1, 2013. It also collaborates with numerous other institutions. As of 2022, 60 Nobel Prize winners have been affiliated with MBL as students, faculty members or researchers. In addition since 1960, there have been, 137 Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigators, early career scientists, international researchers, and professors; 306 members of the National Academy of Sciences; and 236 Members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences who have been affiliated with the lab. - Le laboratoire de biologie marine (Marine Biological Laboratory, MBL) est un centre de recherche international en biologie et en écologie. Fondé en 1888, le MBL est le plus ancien laboratoire de biologie marine d’Amérique. Il est situé dans le village de pêcheurs de Woods Hole (Massachusetts). Aujourd’hui, 55 chercheurs ayant été associés avec ce laboratoire ont reçu, parmi d’autres distinctions, le prix Nobel. Le rôle important du MBL, centre unique en son genre en biologie et en écologie, est largement reconnu. « L'histoire du MBL est plus que l'histoire d'une éminente institution. C'est également l'histoire même de la biologie au cours des 100 dernières années », écrivait l'historien des sciences Garland Allen en 1988 (Barlow et al., 1993 : iv).
