Sie war lange als Bürgerrechtlerin in verschiedenen Themenfeldern, darunter Frauenrechten, aktiv, bevor sie sich schwerpunktmäßig mit Atheismus befasste, seit ihrem Sohn die weitere Mitgliedschaft bei Boy Scouts of America aufgrund seiner atheistischen Anschauungen verwehrt wurde.
