Die bei ihrem Erscheinen im März 1991 auf Peaceville Records als Death Metal mit Doom-Metal-Einflüssen oder Death Doom rezipierte Veröffentlichung gilt im Nachhinein als stilprägend und namensgebend für den Gothic Metal. Es considerado fundamental en la historia del heavy metal, ya que se le asigna el carácter de creador del Metal gótico y una de las mayores influencias en el doom metal moderno (junto con Turn Loose the Swans de My Dying Bride y Serenades de Anathema). Los riffs del Death metal de su disco anterior son, en su mayor parte, trascendidos en este álbum, uniéndoseles influencias de la primera y segunda ola del rock gótico (en particular Sisters of Mercy). La banda siempre toca Gothic en todas sus presentaciones en vivo, aunque últimamente han vuelto a agregar el tema Eternal. (es)
- Gothic is the second full-length album released by British heavy metal band Paradise Lost. The album has been re-released and remastered twice. The 2003 re-release contains two remixes of songs from Lost Paradise (1990), bringing the total running time to 49 minutes and 30 seconds. Remixed/live versions of the songs "Eternal", "Gothic" and "The Painless" appear on the 2003 digipak re-release of Lost Paradise. In 2008, Gothic was re-released with a bonus DVD with a rare performance by the band. The album was performed in full at the 2016 Roadburn festival and released by the band on Bandcamp. (en)
