- The clap skate (also called clapper skates, clapskates, slap skates, slapskates, from Dutch ) is a type of ice skate used in speed skating. Unlike in traditional skates where the blade is rigidly fixed to the boot, clap skates have the blade attached to the boot by a hinge at the front. This allows the blade to remain in contact with the ice longer, as the ankle can now be extended toward the end of the stroke, as well as for more natural movement, thereby distributing the energy of the leg more effectively and efficiently. Clap skates were developed at the Faculty of Human Movement Sciences of the Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam, led by Gerrit Jan van Ingen Schenau, although the idea of a clap skate is much older; designs dating from around 1900 are known. The clap skate was used first in the 1984/1985 skating season. It was, however, not until the late 1990s that the idea was taken seriously. In the 1996/1997 season, the Dutch women's team started using the skates with great success. The rest of the skating world soon followed suit, causing a torrent of world records to be broken in the following seasons, including the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan. (en)

Ceci permet à la lame de rester plus en contact avec la glace, et ainsi la cheville peut être étendue vers la fin de la course. Aussi, il y a un mouvement plus naturel qui permet de distribuer ainsi l'énergie de la jambe de manière plus efficace. Les patins clap ont été mis au point à par la Faculté des Sciences des mouvements humains de l'Université libre d'Amsterdam, dirigée par , bien que l'idée d'un patin clap soit beaucoup plus ancienne puisque des dessins datant des années 1900 sont connus. Le patin clap est utilisé pour la première fois durant la saison de patinage 1984/1985. Il a cependant fallu attendre la fin des années 1990 pour que l'idée soit prise au sérieux. Su diferencia de los patines tradicionales es que la cuchilla no se encuentra totalmente empotrada a la bota, sino que está unida por la parte delantera por una bisagra, que permite a la cuchilla permanecer en contacto con el hielo el mayor tiempo posible, logrando distribuir la energía del patinador de manera más eficiente. La cuchilla es mucho más delgada que los patines de patinaje artístico y pueden llegar a medir, dependiendo de la edad y altura del atleta, de los 30-38 a 46 cm, además las botas son rígidas y están fabricadas con fibra de carbono. Fueron desarrollados en la Universidad Libre de Ámsterdam por investigadores dirigidos por el biomecánico neerlandés , sin embargo existen diseños que datan de los años 1900.
