She was born Beatrice Maude Emelia Eastwick on 15 July 1859 in London, the daughter of Edward Eastwick, orientalist, diplomat, and Member of Parliament, and Rosina Jane Hunter. Her sister was the novelist . She married F. Lane Huddart and they had two daughters. She began her writing career after Huddart's death. In 1891, she married Spencer Horatio Walpole Heron Heron-Maxwell, son of Sir John Heron-Maxwell, 6th Baronet of Springkell.
