- Balthasar Bickel (born December 19, 1965) is a Swiss linguist. Bickel is a specialist in linguistic typology and on Tibeto-Burman languages, especially languages of the Kiranti group. He is currently a professor at the Department of Comparative Language Science at the University of Zurich. Between 2002 and 2011, he taught at the Leipzig University in Germany. He received his graduate training at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen and earned his doctoral degree from the University of Zurich. As a postdoctoral researcher, he spent several years at the University of California, Berkeley, where he became a close collaborator of Johanna Nichols. Bickel has made contributions to the study of tense and aspect, grammatical agreement and grammatical relations, morphological typology, phonological word domains, areal typology, linguistic relativity, and more recently to quantitative methods in language typology. He has done extensive fieldwork on a number of Kiranti languages of Nepal, especially Belhare, Chintang and Puma. He is co-editor of the journal Studies in Language. (en)

Er ist Professor für Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft am Institut für Vergleichende Sprachwissenschaft der Universität Zürich. Zwischen 2002 und 2011 war er Professor an der Universität Leipzig. Er war Doktorand am Max-Planck-Institut für Psycholinguistik in Nimwegen and promovierte an der Universität Zürich. Als Postdoc verbrachte er einige Jahre an der University of California, Berkeley, wo er eng mit zusammenarbeitete. 2016 wurde er zum Mitglied der Academia Europaea gewählt. Bickels Schwerpunkte liegen in den Bereichen Tempus und Aspekt, Kongruenz und syntaktische Funktionen, morphologische Typologie, phonologische Wortdomänen, Arealtypologie, sprachliche Relativität, und in letzter Zeit quantitative Methoden in der Sprachtypologie.
