- The 1998 Superbike World Championship was the eleventh FIM Superbike World Championship season. The season started on 22 March at Phillip Island and finished on 4 October at Sugo after 12 rounds. The season saw the introduction of a revised qualifying system: after two timed qualifying sessions, the sixteen fastest riders were admitted to the newly created Superpole, which determined the first four rows of the starting grid; during this session each rider went on the track in reverse qualifying order to take a single flying lap. Carl Fogarty, who amassed three race victories during the season, won the riders' championship for the third time after 1994 and 1995; Fogarty prevailed over Aaron Slight at the last round, while Troy Corser, who had entered the final event leading the standings, could not race due to injury. Ducati won the manufacturers' championship. The season also saw Sentul (part of Indonesian Grand Prix) being dropped from 1998 calendar due to 1997 Asian Financial Crisis (en)

Dall'inizio della stagione è stata modificata la regolamentazione delle prove ufficiali, con la pole position assegnata non più al termine delle due solite giornate di prove ufficiali ma con l'effettuazione di quella che viene definita "Superpole", una sfida a cui vengono ammessi i migliori 16 piloti delle prove ufficiali che devono ottenere il miglior tempo con un unico tentativo a disposizione. Una gara problematica è stato il Gran Premio di superbike di Laguna Seca 1998, dove ci sono stati numerosi incidenti e la prima gara è stata interrotta prima del suo termine naturale. Il 4 ottobre Troy Corser, capofila del mondiale (con mezzo punto di vantaggio su Slight) e autore il giorno precedente della superpole, in occasione del warm up che precede gara 1 dell'ultimo e decisivo GP del Giappone, cade fratturandosi tre costole e riportando lesioni alla milza, non partecipa pertanto alle gare lasciando, in apparenza, la strada spianata alla vittoria mondiale del neozelandese della Honda. Ma nelle due gare un sorprendente Carl Fogarty (terzo in gara 1 e quarto in gara 2) riesce a sopravanzare Aaron Slight (settimo in gara 1 e sesto in gara 2) e a laurearsi per la terza volta nella sua carriera campione mondiale superbike. - Het wereldkampioenschap superbike seizoen 1998 was het elfde in de geschiedenis van het door de FIM georganiseerde wereldkampioenschap superbike. Het seizoen telde twaalf wedstrijden die telkens door middel van twee races werden verreden. Het seizoen begon op 22 maart op het Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit in Australië en eindigde op 4 oktober op het Sportsland SUGO in Japan. Voorafgaand aan het seizoen werd een nieuw kwalificatiesysteem geïntroduceerd. Na twee kwalificatiesessies mochten de zestien snelste coureurs uitkomen in de zogeheten Superpole-sessie. De uitslag van deze sessie bepaalde de eerste vier rijen op de grid. Tijdens deze sessie gingen de coureurs in omgekeerde volgorde (de zestiende plaats in de kwalificatie als eerste, de snelste coureur als laatste) het circuit op om een enkele vliegende ronde te rijden. De Brit Carl Fogarty behaalde zijn derde kampioenschap met 351,5 punten. In het laatste evenement haalde Fogarty in de stand de Nieuw-Zeelander Aaron Slight in, terwijl de Australiër Troy Corser, die tot op dat moment het kampioenschap leidde, niet deel kon nemen vanwege een blessure.
