Das vom 25. bis 27. Mai 1997 ausgetragene 81. Indianapolis 500 war das zweite Indy 500 unter der Regie der Indy Racing League (IRL) und wurde wie schon das Rennen von dem Niederländer Arie Luyendyk gewonnen. Es war das fünfte Rennen der Saison 1996/97. Das Rennen gilt aufgrund diverser durch die Trennung von der Indy Car World Series und der IRL bedingte Probleme als Tiefpunkt der Geschichte. Die IRL hatte eine neue Regel eingeführt, wonach die 25 bestplatzierten Teams der vorherigen IRL-Saison automatisch für das Rennen qualifiziert waren, sofern sie eine noch zu definierende Mindestgeschwindigkeit erreichten. Damit wären lediglich acht Plätze für die meist sehr zahlreichen Gaststarter übrig geblieben – zudem die IRL ohnehin kein festes Starterfeld hatte. Zwei Teams verzichteten auf dieses Startrecht, jedoch blieb das Problem, dass diverse Autos schneller waren als diese sicher qualifizierten Autos – dabei warb man doch mit den schnellsten 33 Autos. Nach der eigentlichen Qualifikation waren nun Lyn St. James und Johnny Unser nicht qualifiziert, obgleich sie bei weitem nicht die langsamsten Fahrer im Feld waren. Also definierte man die Regel kurzfristig um, so dass nun die schnellsten 33 UND die 25 IRL-Stammteams qualifiziert waren – zum ersten Mal seit (damals wegen eines ähnlichen Problems) und zum zweiten Mal seit waren nun mehr als 33 Autos für das Rennen qualifiziert. Diese 35 Fahrer vereinten auf sich eine durchschnittliche Erfahrung von gerade einmal zwei Indy-500-Starts; ein Wert, der nach Abzug der vier erfahrensten Starter (Arie Luyendyk und Roberto Guerrero hatten zuvor je zwölf; Scott Goodyear und Eddie Cheever je sechs Starts) auf kaum mehr als ein Rennen sank. Keiner der 11 Rookies hatte sich vorher in irgendeiner bedeutenden Serie einen Namen gemacht; insbesondere kam kein einziger Fahrer aus der konkurrierenden CART-Serie. Nach den Regeln sorgte das Wetter für die nächsten Probleme – am eigentlich geplanten Sonntag konnte wegen Regens gar nicht gefahren werden (auf einem Oval ist der Einsatz von Regenreifen aus Sicherheitsgründen nicht möglich) und am Montag kam man auch nur bis Runde 15, bis es wiederum regnete. Bereits vor dem Rennstart in den Aufwärmrunden hatte sich die komplette fünfte Startreihe durch einen Unfall eliminiert; darunter Kenny Bräck, der das Rennen gewinnen sollte. Zwei weitere Autos gaben noch vor dem Start mit technischen Problemen auf und bei , der 1997 seinen einzigen Indy-500-Start hatte, war nach 10 Runden der Motor geplatzt. Somit war das Feld für den Neustart bereits auf 29 Autos geschrumpft. Zunächst hatte man diesen für den folgenden Samstag erwartet, da unter der Woche kaum Zuschauer kommen würden – eine ähnliche Regelung gab es bereits , als ebenfalls Sonntag und Montag verregnet waren. Doch man entschied sich für einen Start am Dienstag, an dem das Rennen nun tatsächlich stattfinden konnte, wobei es letzten Endes bis zur Runde 28 dauerte, bis man tatsächlich mehr als eine Runde am Stück Gas geben konnte – davor gab es zwei Aufwärmrunden und zwei Zwischenfälle. Für völlige Verwirrung sorgte dann das Rennende: Eingangs der 199. Runde kollidierte Tony Stewart leicht mit der Außenmauer und verbog sich dabei die Aufhängung. Das Rennen wurde (wie in einem solchen Falle üblich) neutralisiert, was normalerweise das Rennende bedeutet hätte. Doch für die 200. und letzte Runde wurde das Rennen ohne jede Vorwarnung wieder freigegeben. Auch die Streckentechnik war offensichtlich überfordert, denn es dauerte fast die halbe Runde, bis auch die Warnlampen rund um die Strecke erloschen waren. It was the second Indianapolis 500 held as part of the USAC-sanctioned Indy Racing League, and was part of the 1996-97 Indy Racing League season. It marked the introduction of a new production-based, normally aspirated engine formula as well as a new chassis design. The new engine formula resulted in a substantial drop in speeds compared to the previous year, and the chassis were noticeably different in many aspects - both visually, and mechanically. A controversy during qualifying saw two bumped cars re-added to the starting field after the close of time trials. The starting grid was made up of 35 cars. It was the first time since 1979, and only the second time since 1933 that more than the traditional 33 cars comprised the starting grid. While the field had been expanded, a crash during the pace lap eliminated three cars. Two further cars failed to start due to mechanical problems, and only 29 cars took the green flag. With two laps to go in the race, polesitter Arie Luyendyk led teammate Scott Goodyear. A caution came out on the 199th lap, but the pace car did not come out to pick up the field. Drivers and crews expected the race would finish under the caution. Without warning, the green and white flag were displayed at the starter's stand on the final lap, signifying the track was back to racing conditions. None of the cars in the field were prepared for the restart, and yellow lights around the course remained illuminated for many seconds afterwards. Luyendyk held on to win, but controversy erupted regarding the officials' poor handling of the situation. This last-lap incident, followed by a major scoring snafu two weeks later at Texas, led to the USAC being permanently removed from sanctioning the IRL and Indy 500, in favor of in-house officiating. The win by Arie Luyendyk marked the milestone 50th Indianapolis 500 victory for Firestone. It was Luyendyk's second Indy victory (he also won in 1990), as well as Scott Goodyear's second runner-up finish (1992).
