Zebulon Baird Vance (May 13, 1830 – April 14, 1894) was the 37th and 43rd governor of North Carolina, a U.S. Senator from North Carolina, and a Confederate officer during the American Civil War. A prolific writer and noted public speaker, Vance became one of the most influential Southern leaders of the Civil War and postbellum periods. As a leader of the New South, Vance favored the rapid modernization of the Southern economy, railroad expansion, school construction, and reconciliation with the North. In addition, he frequently spoke out against antisemitism. Although considered progressive in his era, Vance was also a slave owner and is now widely considered racist.

Vance begon zijn politieke loopbaan als lid van de Whig Party voor zijn thuisstaat en werd in 1858 verkozen als lid van het Huis van Afgevaardigden. Hij verdedigde de Unie en zocht in 1860 naar een compromis om de secessie van de slavenstaten te vermijden. Na een korte tijd in het Zuidelijke leger te hebben gediend, werd Vance in september 1862 gouverneur van North Carolina, wat hij zou blijven tot het aan einde van de oorlog in april 1865. Han tjänstgjorde som överste i Amerikas konfedererade staters armé. Han representerade delstaten North Carolina i båda kamrarna av USA:s kongress, först i representanthuset 1858–1861 och sedan i senaten från 1879 fram till sin död. Han var guvernör i North Carolina 1862–1865 och 1877–1879. Vance studerade juridik vid University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Han inledde 1852 sin karriär som advokat i Asheville och tjänstgjorde samma år som åklagare i Buncombe County. År 1853 gifte han sig med Harriette "Hattie" Espy i Burke County. Paret fick fyra söner. Zebulon B. Vance tillträdde 1858 som kongressledamot. Han satt kvar i kongressen fram till början av inbördeskriget. Han var sedan kapten i den konfedererade armén.
