- Der Zebrawels (Hypancistrus zebra) ist ein Süßwasserzierfisch aus der Gattung Hypancistrus. Er wurde erstmals Ende der 1980er Jahre im Rio Xingú in Brasilien entdeckt. Seit Anfang 2005 wurde von der brasilianischen Regierung Fang, Zucht und Ausfuhr des Zebrawels verboten, da die Bestände im Rio Xingú sehr stark gefährdet sind. Durch den geplanten Bau des Belo-Monte-Wasserkraftwerks würde der gesamte Lebensraum des Zebrawelses austrocknen. Dieser Fisch kann ein Alter von ca. 15 Jahren und eine Größe von ca. 8–10 cm, Männchen über zehn Jahren auch mal ca. 12 cm, erreichen. Die Geschlechtsunterschiede sind sehr schwer und erst nach zwei oder drei Lebensjahren zu erkennen. Das Männchen bekommt in der Regel eine breitere Kopfpartie und sieht daher etwas massiger aus. Des Weiteren sind die Hautzähnchen (Odontoden) auf den Kiemendeckeln bei den Männchen deutlich länger als bei den Weibchen. Auch auf dem ersten Flossenstrahl der Brustflossen tragen die Männchen längere Odontoden. Weibchen wirken von oben betrachtet im Bauchbereich häufig dicker, als die gleichmäßig spitz zum Schwanzende zulaufenden Männchen. Auf etwa sechs Männchen kommt nur ein Weibchen. (de)

- The zebra pleco (Hypancistrus zebra) is a species of catfish endemic to a small section of the Rio Xingu in Brazil. It occurs in the big bend area of the river, downstream from the town of Altamira, Para. It was first described in 1991. It gets its name from its black and white stripes, resembling the colouration of a zebra. This species grows to a length of 6.4 centimetres (2.5 in) SL. This species was exported from Brazil in for sale as aquarium fish. However, currently, the Brazilian government bans the export of certain fish species, including H. zebra. H. zebra is threatened by the Belo Monte Dam in the Xingu river which has caused a severe reduction of the water flow of the entire known distribution range of the species. Due to this, the species has been classified as critically endangered and may soon become extinct in the wild. It is subject to several captive breeding programs. It is commercially bred in captivity for the aquarium trade. Mature males have a wider head and longer interopercular spines than females. After spawning, the males will guard the eggs. The fry swim after seven days and absorb the yolk sac in two weeks. (en)
