- Xpectation (ausgesprochen wie „expectation“, englisch für Erwartung) ist das 26. Studioalbum des US-amerikanischen Musikers Prince und trägt als Untertitel den Namen „New Directions in Music from Prince“ (englisch für „Neue Wege in der Musik von Prince“). Es erschien am 1. Januar 2003 bei seinem eigenen Label NPG Records und war ausschließlich als Download für registrierte Mitglieder seiner damaligen Website erhältlich. Xpectation ist Prince’ erstes Instrumentalalbum und kann als Konzeptalbum bezeichnet werden, weil alle Songtitel mit dem Anfangsbuchstaben „X“ beginnen. Die Musik zählt zu den Genres Contemporary R&B, Funk, Jazz und Rock, als Gastmusiker wirken Candy Dulfer und Vanessa-Mae mit. Prince veranstaltete keine nennenswerte Musikpromotion für Xpectation und da es in den internationalen Musikcharts nicht geführt wurde, hatte es keine Möglichkeit, Gold- oder Platinstatus zu erreichen. Musikkritiker bewerteten das Album wesentlich schwächer als die meisten seiner Alben. Auf CD oder Schallplatte erschien Xpectation bis heute (2022) nicht. (de)

It is the first instrumental album released under Prince's own name. Previously unannounced, it was released as an MP3 download on New Year's Day, 2003 to members of the NPG Music Club with no formal artwork, only two weeks after the commercial release of his previous album, One Nite Alone... Live!. In 2004, Xpectation was released through the NPG Music Club's Musicology Download Store. The artwork by Sam Jennings was officially released in September 2015, when a digital lossless version was made available through music streaming service Tidal. All the tracks in the album have titles starting with the letter 'X'. (en)
