- Las islas Windmill, en inglés Windmill Islands son un grupo de islas rocosas y rocas de la Antártida Oriental (66°20′S 110°28′E / -66.333, 110.467) abarcan unos 10 km de ancho, paralelas a la costa Budd de la Tierra de Wilkes 27 km inmediatamente al norte del a lo largo del lado oriental de la bahía Vincennes. Cartografiadas a partir de fotografías aéreas tomadas por la USN Operación Highjump, 1946-1947. Nombradas así por la US-ACAN (Estados Unidos) en honor al personal de la Operación Windmill, 1947-1948, que aterrizó en isla Holl en la punta suroeste para establecer control terrestre para las fotografías de la Operación Highjump. El término "Operation Windmill" es una expresión popular después de disolverse la expedición y se refiere al uso extensivo de helicópteros hecho por este grupo. Sie liegen zwischen dem nördlichen Rand des Law Domes und dem südlichen Ausläufer des Vanderford-Gletschers parallel zum Ostufer der Vincennes Bay. Das Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names benannte sie 1955 nach der von Gerald Ketchum geleiteten Operation Windmill (1947–1948), da Mitglieder dieser Expedition auf der Holl-Insel im Südwesten des Archipels landeten, um eine Basis für die Operation Highjump (1946–1947) einzurichten. Der Begriff „Windmill“ (englisch für Windmühle) ist eine Umschreibung der bei Ketchums Expedition vielfach eingesetzten Hubschrauber. Aus dem Alter und der Metamorphosen der Gesteine kann auf eine geodynamische Entwicklung im Mesoproterozoikum geschlossen werden. - The Windmill Islands are an Antarctic group of rocky islands and rocks about 11.1 kilometres (6 nmi) wide, paralleling the coast of Wilkes Land for 31.5 kilometres (17 nmi) immediately north of Vanderford Glacier along the east side of Vincennes Bay. Kirkby Shoal is a small shoal area with depths of less than 18 metres (59 ft) extending about 140 metres (459 ft) westwards and SSW, about 3.4 kilometres (2.1 mi) from the summit of Shirley Island, Windmill Islands, and 0.24 kilometres (0.15 mi) NW of Stonehocker Point, Clark Peninsula. The Windmill Islands were mapped from aerial photographs taken by USN Operation Highjump, 1946–47. So named by the US-ACAN because personnel of Operation Windmill, 1947–48, landed on Holl Island at the southwest end of the group to establish ground control for USN Operation Highjump photographs. The term "Operation Windmill" is a popular expression which developed after the expedition disbanded and refers to the extensive use of helicopters made by this group. The official title of this expedition was the 'Second Antarctic Development Project', U.S. Navy Task Force 39, 1947–48. (en)
