Van Saarloos was elected as a Fellow of the American Physical Society in 2007 and received various honors and awards for his research. For founding the Lorentz Center in Leiden, and for bringing the center to fruition as the first director from 1997 to 2009, he received a royal distinction. Since 2009 he has been mostly active promoting science and strengthening the Dutch science system, and on the European level. He is the chair of the Energy Steering Panel of the European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC) for which he will become the president in 2023 and also the Chair Permanent Committee National Institutes of NWO and KNAW.
