- William Addis (1734 –1808) fue un empresario inglés que se cree produjo el primer cepillo de dientes en masa en 1780. Addis nació en 1734 en Inglaterra, probablemente en Clerkenwell, Londres. En 1770, Addis había sido encarcelado por causar disturbios en Spitalfields. Mientras estaba en prisión, y observando el uso de una escoba para barrer el suelo, decidió que el método predominante utilizado para limpiar los dientes en ese momento -concha aplastada u hollín- con un paño era ineficaz y podía ser mejorado. Para ello, salvó un pequeño hueso de animal que había sobrado de la comida que había comido la noche anterior, en la que perforó pequeños agujeros. Luego obtuvo algunas cerdas de uno de sus guardias, que ató en mechones que luego pasó a través de los agujeros en el hueso, y que finalmente selló con pegamento. Después de su liberación, comenzó un negocio para fabricar los cepillos de dientes que había construido, y pronto se hizo muy rico. Murió en 1808, y dejó el negocio a su hijo mayor, también llamado William, que permaneció en propiedad familiar hasta 1996.Bajo el nombre de Wisdom Toothbrush, la empresa fabricaba en 2010 70 millones de cepillos de dientes al año en el Reino Unido. - William Addis (1734–1808) was an English entrepreneur believed to have produced the first mass-produced toothbrush in 1780. Addis was born in 1734 in England, probably in Clerkenwell, London. In 1770, Addis had been gaoled for causing a riot in Spitalfields. While in prison, and observing the use of a broom to sweep the floor, he decided that the prevalent method used to clean teeth at the time – crushed shell or soot – with a cloth was ineffective and could be improved. To that end, he saved a small animal bone left over from the meal he had eaten the previous night, into which he drilled small holes. He then obtained some bristles from one of his guards, which he tied in tufts that he then passed through the holes in the bone, and which he finally sealed with glue. After his release, he started a business to manufacture the toothbrushes he had built, and he soon became very rich. He died in 1808, and left the business to his eldest son, also called William, and it stayed in family ownership until 1996. Under the name Wisdom Toothbrushes, the company now manufactures 70 million toothbrushes per year in the UK. By 1840 toothbrushes were being mass-produced in England, France, Germany, and Japan. (en)
