| - The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)'s Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) is an effort to improve the accessibility of the World Wide Web (WWW or Web) for people using a wide range of user agent devices, not just standard web browsers. This is especially important for people with physical disabilities which require such devices to access the Web.
The W3C was founded in 1994 to advance the Web. It is responsible for the development of uniform protocols to assure the interoperability of the Web.
The WAI, part of the W3C, has developed a number of guidelines that can help to make Web sites more accessible, especially from the view of physically disabled people. (en)

La idea general del WAI es crear una serie de reglas claras.
El grado de accesibilidad se establece en niveles denominados A, AA, y AAA, correspondiendo respectivamente a criterios mínimos de accesibilidad, extendidos, y accesibilidad máxima. Técnicamente la accesibilidad se implementa mediante pautas de lógica estructural de documentos, contenido auto-explicativo y semántica adicional, con la intención de permitir, a una audiencia lo más extensa posible de usuarios con distintos niveles de dotación tecnológica y capacidad sensorial, acceder a la información que se intenta representar y transmitir.
Se incide especialmente en que las capacidades tecnológicas punteras (entiéndase por ejemplo animaciones con Adobe Flash, JavaScript, AJAX) se usen con la moderación o consideración suficiente para llegar al máximo conjunto posible de usuarios con una funcionalidad suficiente, sin desvirtuar el concepto de acceso frente al de avance tecnológico de moda, y prestando especial cuidado de ofrecer información alternativa. Erklärtes Ziel des W3C ist es hierbei, das WWW möglichst vielen Menschen zugänglich zu machen. Dazu gehören auch Menschen mit verschiedenen Behinderungen. Im Rahmen der Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) veröffentlichte das W3C daher bereits 1999 Standards für barrierefreies Webdesign. In den „Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0“ (WCAG 1.0) werden sowohl Anforderungen an die Site-Programmierung als auch an Inhaltsarchitekturen, Layout-Grundlagen und Technologie-Verwendung gestellt.
Insbesondere gelten die Richtlinien zur barrierefreien Seitengestaltung des W3C-WAI WCAG 1.0 als grundlegender Standard, auf dem viele weitergehende Richtlinien aufbauen, so zum Beispiel die Section 508 in den USA und die Barrierefreie Informationstechnik-Verordnung (BITV) in Deutschland.
Der Europäische Rat hat 2000 in Feira im „Aktionsplan e-Europe 2002“ beschlossen, dass öffentliche Websites in Europa bis zum 1. Januar 2008 die WAI-Kriterien erfüllen sollen. (de)

- Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) (pl. Inicjatywa dostępności do sieci) – inicjatywa W3C mająca na celu zwiększenie szeroko rozumianej dostępności stron WWW. Oprócz dostępności dla osób niepełnosprawnych, WAI walczy o równouprawnienie wszelkich sposobów korzystania z Internetu.
Obecnie wiele stron dyskryminuje np. osoby z wadami wzroku lub słuchu, które używają specjalistycznych urządzeń do surfowania, użytkowników wolnych łącz internetowych, właścicieli urządzeń przenośnych (np. palmtopy, telefony komórkowe itp.), starych komputerów posiadających niskie rozdzielczości lub przeglądarki tekstowe. WCAG 1.0 är en förkortning för Web Content Accesibility Guidelines 1.0, på svenska Riktlinjer för utformning av innehåll på webben 1.0. Detta är en W3C-specifikation som riktar sig till alla som producerar innehåll för publicering på webben.
Det är riktlinjer utformade av WAI som talar om hur webbsidor ska vara utformade för att vara tillgängliga. Specifikationen innehåller fjorton riktlinjer som är generella principer för tillgänglig design. Till varje riktlinje finns det en eller flera ”checkpoints” (i svenska översättningen riktpunkter). De beskriver hur man uppnår riktlinjen på webbsidorna. Dessa riktpunker finns också sorterade efter prioriteringsordning i en bilaga ”List of Checkpoints for the Web Content Accesibility Guidlines”. Det finns även ett tekniskt dokument, ”Techniques”, knutet till riktlinjerna som förklarar hur man använder olika metoder i olika kodspråk.
