- Das Akronym VEPTR steht für Vertikal Expandierbare Titan-Rippenprothese (englisch Vertical Expandable Prosthetic Titanium Ribs), ein Produkt der Firma Synthes zur Behandlung kindlicher Deformitäten des Thorax.Es handelt sich um eine Spezialform eines verlängerbaren Stabes („Growing Rod“).Ein alternatives System ist das USS-paediatric-Instrumentarium für ältere Kinder, gleichfalls von der Fa. Synthes. Das Instrumentarium wird eingesetzt, um bei einer schweren Thoraxdeformität einen zu kleinen oder zu schmalen Rippenthorax aufzuweiten und aufzurichten.Es besteht aus einer ausziehbaren „Titanrippe“ in gebogener Form mit mehreren Löchern in Reihe zur Fixierung in der gewünschten Länge. Nach jeweils 6 Monaten kann eine Verlängerung operativ erfolgen. Die Fixierung erfolgt zwischen zwei Rippen oder zwischen einer Rippe und dem Beckenkamm.Dadurch erfolgt eine indirekte Aufrichtung der deformierten Wirbelsäule und damit ergibt sich eine Volumenzunahme des Rippenthorax mitsamt der Lunge. - Vertical Expandable Prosthetic Titanium Ribs (VEPTR) is a product of Synthes for the treatment of childhood deformities of the thorax. It is a special form of a lengthenable rod ("Growing Rod"). An alternative system is the USS pediatric for older children, also from Synthes. The instrument is used to dilate a too small or too narrow rib thorax in severe thoracic deformity. It consists of a telescopic "titanium rib" in curved form with several holes in a row for fixing in the desired length. A prolongation can be carried out after 6 months. The fixation takes place between two ribs or between a rib and the iliac crest. This results in an indirect erection of the deformed spine, resulting in an increase in the volume of the thoracic cavity along with the lung. (en)
