La variable más común es el llamado Motor Stirling que se desarrolló en 1816 por Robert Stirling el cual puso un quemador para el calentamiento del aire en el interior del cilindro el cual era activado por medio del giro de un volante de inercia. At the beginning of an outstroke, a valve in the head of the cylinder opens and admits a charge of burning gas and air, which is trapped by the closing of the valve and expands. Towards the end of the stroke the charge comes into contact with a water- or air-cooled part of the cylinder and is chilled, causing a sudden drop in pressure sufficient to suck the piston – which is open towards the crank – back on the return stroke. No início do ciclo, uma válvula na parte superior do cilindro se abre e admite uma carga de gás em combustão e ar, que é aprisionada pelo fechamento da válvula e se expande. No final do curso, a carga entra em contato com uma parte do cilindro refrigerada por água ou ar e é resfriada, causando uma queda súbita na pressão suficiente para sugar o pistão, que está aberto em direção à manivela, retornando ao início do ciclo.
