Uno dei suoi centri furono le miniere delle Asturie dove si era sviluppata una forte conflittualità. Nonostante l'adesione di settori operai cristiani il sindacato ha sempre mantenuto un carattere aconfessionale. Il documento fondativo del sindacato viene approvato e pubblicato nel 1961 e nei vent'anni successivi, mentre perdura la dittatura, la USO espande progressivamente la propria attività partendo dai nuclei originari di Madrid, Asturie e Paesi Baschi. Alle elezioni sindacali del 2019 è risultata il terzo sindacato spagnolo dopo Comisiones Obreras e UGT con 11.557 delegati eletti (4,2%). (it)

- The Unión Sindical Obrera (USO) is a Spanish trade union. Founded as a clandestine organization in 1961—during the dictatorship of Francisco Franco—the union was an outgrowth of Roman Catholic organizations dedicated to Catholic social teaching, particularly on the dignity of work. Influenced by the French Democratic Confederation of Labour (CFDT), which also had Catholic roots but was by that time drifting away from any formal relation to the church, USO declared itself from the outset to be secular and socialist. Like the CFDT, after 1968 USO advocated autogestion (workers' self-management). After the Spanish transition to democracy, the group split, with one faction uniting to the Unión General de Trabajadores (historically affiliated with the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party or PSOE), another joining the Workers' Commissions (Comisiones Obreras, affiliated with the Communist Party of Spain), and a third continuing as a small, independent trade union. - Unión Sindical Obrera (afgekort: USO, Nederlands: 'Arbeiders Vakbondsunie') is een christelijke Spaanse vakbond. De bond werd opgericht in de illegaliteit in de jaren 60 van de 20e eeuw, in de marge van de Spaanse Staat onder het regime van Franco, toen het Sindicato vertical de enige toegestane vakbeweging was. USO heeft een grote rol gespeeld tijdens de overgang van Spanje naar de democratie na Franco's dood in 1975, maar verloor grote delen van haar aanhang aan CC.OO. en UGT toen vakbonden een paar jaar gelegaliseerd werden. Desalniettemin is USO vandaag de dag, na deze twee bonden, de derde vakbond van Spanje, met zo'n 120.000 leden en 10.000 afgevaardigden in verschillende sectoren. De bond zit aan bij onderhandelingen van meer dan 500 verschillende cao's. Daarnaast is het de enige Spaanse bond met een permanente solidariteitskas om de leden financieel bij te kunnen staan waar nodig. De bond is lid van de internationale koepelorganisatie Europees Verbond van Vakverenigingen en was in 2006 mede-oprichter van het IVV (nl)
