La novela, encuadrada en la corriente literaria postmoderna, fue nominada en Estados Unidos al «National Book Award», fue un best seller y se ha situado como una de las obras de su autor más conocidas y mejor valoradas. En una encuesta organizada por The New York Times en 2006, la novela quedó en segundo lugar de una lista que pretendía reflejar las mejores obras estadounidenses de ficción de los últimos 25 años (la ganadora fue Beloved, de Toni Morrison). Nommé au National Book Award, couronné par l'American Book Awards, il s'agit d'un des livres les plus connus et les plus lus de son auteur. Une enquête du New York Times conduite en 2006 auprès d'auteurs et de critiques a placé Outremonde en deuxième position du classement des meilleurs livres de fiction des 25 années précédentes (11 votes sur 125, contre 15 pour Beloved de Toni Morrison). Le titre original du livre évoque la notion d'au-delà, ou de monde dissimulé au regard. DeLillo a expliqué avoir songé à ce titre en associant la problématique de l'enfouissement des déchets évoquée dans le roman, et Pluton, dieu des enfers. La version française est parue en 1999 aux éditions Actes Sud, dans une traduction de Marianne Véron en collaboration avec Isabelle Reinharez. (fr)

The novel is centered on the efforts of Nick Shay, a waste management executive who grew up in the Bronx, to trace the history of the baseball that won the New York Giants the pennant in 1951, and encompasses numerous subplots drawn from American history in the second half of the twentieth century. Described as both postmodernist and a reaction to postmodernism, it examines themes of nuclear proliferation, waste, and the contribution of individual lives to the course of history. A best-seller that was nominated for the National Book Award and shortlisted for the Pulitzer Prize, Underworld is often regarded as DeLillo's supreme achievement. In 2006, a survey of eminent authors and critics conducted by The New York Times named Underworld as the runner-up for the best work of American fiction of the past 25 years, behind only Toni Morrison's Beloved. - Podziemia (oryg. Underworld) – powieść Dona DeLillo opublikowana w 1997 roku. Jest złożonym portretem Ameryki z czasów zimnej wojny i późniejszych. W sposób dla siebie charakterystyczny DeLillo przeplata wątki postaci całkowicie fikcyjnych z wątkami dotyczącymi postaci historycznych (Frank Sinatra, J. Edgar Hoover, Lenny Bruce i inne). Stworzony na ponad ośmiuset stronach pejzaż nie daje się łatwo streścić, łatwiej jednak pokusić się o wyszczególnienie pewnych powtarzających się wątków – są pośród nich: kryzys religii, odpady (w całym spektrum znaczeń), funkcjonowanie demokracji i państwowości amerykańskiej oraz wszechobecna (także zimnowojenna) paranoja. Prolog do powieści (pod tytułem „Pafko at the Wall”) pojawił się na łamach Harper’s Magazine już w roku 1992. W 2001 r. wydawnictwo Scribner wydało ten początkowy rozdział Podziemi jako nowelę.
