- Trident ist ein erodierter Vulkankomplex am Beginn der Alaska-Halbinsel, der sich entlang einer von Nordosten nach Südwesten ausgerichteten Verwerfung auf der Pazifischen Seite der Alaska-Halbinsel gebildet hat.Er besteht aus zahlreichen Kegeln (bis zu 23) mit einer Höhe von bis zu 1864 m (6115 Fuß). Im Jahr 1953 bildete sich eine neue Kuppel auf einer Höhe von 1097 m (3599 Fuß) an der südwestlichen Flanke. Namensgeber des Gebietes war – nach Angaben des United States Geological Survey – , ein Mitglied der National Geographic Society, im Jahr 1916. Er benannte das Gebiet nach drei markanten Gipfeln. Das Gebiet erhielt noch weitere Namen, aber im Jahr 1928 wurde er von dem United States Board on Geographic Names offiziell Mount Trident benannt, der jetzige Name Trident Volcano wurde 1968 vergeben. - Trident Volcano is an eroded volcanic complex on the Alaska Peninsula in Katmai National Park, Alaska. Up to 23 domes comprise the complex stratovolcano, with the greatest elevation of 6,115 feet (1,864 m). The most recent major activity produced a 3,599-foot (1,097 m) dome in an amphitheater on the southwest flank of the southwest peak. Volcano Novarupta formed on its slopes in the largest volcanic eruption of the 20th century. According to the United States Geological Survey, the descriptive name, Trident, was given by Robert Fiske Griggs of the National Geographic Society, in 1916, because there were three major peaks. The volcano has been known by several variants of the name. The feature was officially named Mount Trident by the United States Board on Geographic Names in 1928. The board assigned the current name in 1968. (en)
