- The track and field competition at the 2011 Military World Games was held from 17–23 July 2011 at the Estádio Olímpico João Havelange in Rio de Janeiro. The programme contained 35 athletics events, 20 for men and 15 for women. The marathon races (held in conjunction with the annual ) took place on 17 July while the track and field events were held in the stadium from 19–23 July. The host nation Brazil topped the medal table with eight gold medals and fourteen in total. Kenya was a close runner-up, with six golds and a total of fifteen medals after strong performances in the middle to long distance running events. Poland, Qatar and Ukraine were other countries which performed well. Twenty-six nations had a medal-winning athlete in the track and field competition. The marathon competition returned, after a break at the 2007 edition, but the racewalk and decathlon were dropped. Despite the increased number of women's track events, only three field events were contested by female athletes. Qatar's Femi Ogunode was the only athlete to win two individual events, taking the 100 metres and 200 metres titles in Games records. Ana Cláudia Silva of Brazil won the women's 200 m and the 4×100 metres relay, as well as the 100 m silver, while her compatriot Geisa Coutinho won the 400 m and featured in both of Brazil's winning relay teams. Keila Costa came close to a long jump/triple jump double, but was narrowly beaten by Simona La Mantia in the latter event. A total of ten were broken during the five-day competition. Chinese Olympic medallist Zhang Wenxiu won the women's hammer throw in a Games record – a feat also achieved by Poland's Paweł Wojciechowski in the men's pole vault. The men's 400 metres was won by Sajjad Hashemi in an Iranian national record time. (en)

Le gare di atletica leggera ai V Giochi mondiali militari hanno avuto luogo dal 17 al 23 luglio 2011 presso l'Estádio Olímpico João Havelange di Rio de Janeiro. Le gare di maratona si svolsero in concomitanza con l'annuale il 17 luglio, mentre gli eventi su pista si svolsero tra il 19 e il 23 luglio. Il paese ospitante, il Brasile, si posizionò in testa al medagliere dei Giochi con ben 14 medaglie, di cui 14 d'oro. Al secondo posto di classificò il Kenya, con 6 ori per un totale di 15 medaglie. 26 paesi guadagnarono almeno una medaglia dei Giochi. In questa edizione dei Giochi è tornata la maratona, dopo che era stata tolta dal programma nel 2007, ma non si svolsero le gare di marcia e il decathlon. Nonostante l'aumento delle specialità femminili, si ebbero solo 3 femminili. Durante questa edizione dei Giochi mondiali militari sono stati infranti ben 10 record dei giochi, 5 maschili e 5 femminili, oltre a 3 record nazionali (quello dei 400 m maschili, quello degli 800 m maschili e quello dei 5000 m maschili). Srebrna medalistka biegu na 400 metrów – reprezentująca Kazachstan została zdyskwalifikowana za doping, odebrano jej medal, a rezultat (51,27) został anulowany. Zawody były równocześnie traktowane jako 44 Wojskowe Mistrzostwa Świata w lekkoatletyce. (pl)
- As provas de atletismo nos Jogos Mundiais Militares de 2011 foram disputadas entre os dias 17 e 23 de julho de 2011 no Estádio Olímpico João Havelange, no Rio de Janeiro. A maratona foi disputada no Parque do Flamengo, simultaneamente com a Maratona do Rio de Janeiro. Os homens competiram em 20 eventos e as mulheres em 15, sendo os 400 metros com barreira, salto em altura, salto com vara, arremesso de disco, arremesso de peso e lançamento de dardo sem versões femininas. Os 110 metros com barreiras masculino é equivalentes aos 100 metros com barreiras feminino. (pt)
