- Hacia una arquitectura (originalmente, en francés: Vers une architecture) es un libro escrito por Le Corbusier y en menor medida por Amédée Ozenfant, quien firmó con el pseudónimo Saugnier y cuya autoría sólo se constata en la primera edición. Fue publicado en la revista de vanguardia L'Esprit Nouveau, siendo en realidad una serie de artículos. La versión íntegra apareció en 1923. El libro, con ánimo de generar polémica y nuevos puntos de vista, postuló la sencillez y la abstracción en la arquitectura. Además de mostrar en líneas generales la concepción de la arquitectura de Le Corbusier, se trata de una de las obras que más han influido en el desarrollo de la arquitectura moderna. Los capítulos, que se corresponden a distintos artículos aparecidos en la revista, son de diferentes calidades. De este libro proviene la famosa definición de la arquitectura de Le Corbusier, a su vez inspirada en otra de Provensal: La arquitectura es el juego sabio, correcto y magnífico de los volúmenes reunidos bajo la luz. Ces essais, qui étaient d'abord parus dans la revue « L'Esprit Nouveau », exposent les théories du Corbusier promouvant une architecture contemporaine. À mots comptés, il épouse la cause d'une architecture cherchant la vérité de son époque, visant à établir une production architecturale propre à son temps plutôt que de se soumettre aux diktats des styles classique et renaissant obsolètes. On y comprend également que l'architecture antique grecque était une grande source d'inspiration de l'architecte. On y retrouve notamment les concepts du tracé régulateur et du plan libre. Les cinq points de l'architecture moderne sont évoqués. Publié en 1923, Vers une architecture demeure un des textes-manifestes du Mouvement moderne. - Vers une architecture, recently translated into English as Toward an Architecture but commonly known as Towards a New Architecture after the 1927 translation by Frederick Etchells, is a collection of essays written by Le Corbusier (Charles-Edouard Jeanneret), advocating for and exploring the concept of modern architecture. The book has had a lasting effect on the architectural profession, serving as the manifesto for a generation of architects, a subject of hatred for others, and unquestionably an important work of architectural theory. The architectural historian Reyner Banham wrote that its influence was "beyond that of any other architectural work published in this [20th] century to date", and that unparalleled influence has continued, unabated, into the 21st century. The polemical book contains seven essays, all but one of which were published in the magazine L'Esprit Nouveau beginning in 1921. Each essay dismisses the contemporary trends of eclecticism and art deco, replacing them with architecture that was meant to be more than a stylistic experiment; rather, an architecture that would fundamentally change how humans interacted with buildings. This new mode of living derived from a new spirit defining the industrial age, demanding a rebirth of architecture based on function and a new aesthetic based on pure form. The authorship of the book was complex. Le Corbusier co-owned L'Esprit Nouveau with fellow purist painter Amédée Ozenfant. They co-signed many of the original essays as "Le Corbusier-Saugnier," and Ozenfant had been a close friend of Corbusier. Ozenfant denied having written the book, claiming that the essays were based on conversations the two had had together about theories written by Auguste Perret and Adolf Loos. As the book became more known, their fight became more heated. Ozenfant began to claim not only more credit for authorship, but also that Le Corbusier had purposefully excluded him by dedicating the original edition to Ozenfant. The English translation of the book has also been a source of controversy with regard to its change of style and very specific alterations to the text. The alterations have generated criticism and required correction, even as some of them began to define architectural language. A new translation was released in 2007 that is meant to be truer to Le Corbusier's intention. (en)

Het boek had een grote invloed op de ontwikkeling van modernisme in de architectuur. Het boek bevat zeven essays, die - met uitzondering van eentje - allemaal waren gepubliceerd in het tijdschrift , begin 1921. Het boek pleitte voor een wedergeboorte van de architectuur, gebaseerd op de functie en voor een nieuwe esthetiek die gebaseerd was op vorm (zie ook: functionalisme). In het boek gebruikte Le Corbusier de puristische methode van assembleren van collages van korte alinea’s teksten, stellingen en aforismen. Her en der in het boek komen steeds weer andere omschrijvingen voor van wat hij onder moderne architectuur verstond.

Daarom zijn het mooie vormen, de mooiste vormen...’. Met een reeks foto’s van objecten als silo’s, oceaanstomers en vliegtuigen illustreerde hij zijn interesse voor het machinetijdperk. Alom bekend werd zijn uitspraak: La maison est une machine à habiter (het huis is een woonmachine), waarmee hij probeerde duidelijk te maken dat het huis als een goed functionerend apparaat om in te wonen is. Zijn polemisch betoog kwam neer op een radicale breuk met de negentiende-eeuwse stijlarchitectuur – ‘Architectuur heeft niets met “stijl” te maken’ – en een faillietverklaring van de gevestigde architectenopleiding aan de École des Beaux Arts. Hij meende dat die volstrekt achterhaald was door de rationele ontwerpen van ingenieurs van de andere takken van het bouwbedrijf en uit de industrie. (nl)
