Er erschien zuerst im Juni 1944 in den USA bei Dodd, Mead and Company und im Juli desselben Jahres im Vereinigten Königreich im Collins Crime Club. Die deutsche Erstausgabe erschien 1946 im Scherz Verlag (Bern) in der Übersetzung von Ursula von Wiese. 2002 gab der gleiche Verlag eine Neuübersetzung von Rebecca Gablé heraus. Es ermittelt Superintendent Battle in seinem fünften und letzten Fall. Battle hatte zuvor in Die Memoiren des Grafen, Der letzte Joker, Mit offenen Karten und Das Sterben in Wychwood mitgewirkt. (de)

Esa es la razón del título "Hacia cero" y encierra una visión filosófica de entender el mundo anticipándose a lo que actualmente se conoce como Teoría del caos. C'est le cinquième et dernier roman mettant en scène le Superintendant Battle. Le récit évoque le champion de tennis Nevile Strange qui rassemble pour des vacances, sous le prétexte d'en faire des amies, son ex-femme Audrey Strange, et sa nouvelle compagne Kay Mortimer-Strange. L'idée n'est pas du goût de Lady Tressillian, tante de Nevile et propriétaire de la villa où tout ce beau monde se retrouve. Nevile a gardé un petit faible pour son ex-femme, laquelle inspire un amour sans espoir à son cousin Thomas. Autour de ce quatuor, on retrouve Edward Latimer, un ami de Kay qui aimerait bien être plus qu'un ami, et Mr. Treves, vieil avocat à la retraite en pleine possession de ses capacités en matière de criminologie... He insists on bringing both his former wife and his present wife, though Lady Tressilian finds this awkward. Her old friend Treves dies, then she is murdered as well; Superintendent Battle and his nephew are called in. The book is the last to feature Superintendent Battle. The novel was well received at publication, noted for the well-developed characters. A later review called it superb as to the plot, noting also how well the novel depicted the gentlemanly behaviour expected at the main tennis tournament in 1944. (en)
