- La tentación de San Antonio (del alemán: Versuchung des heiligen Antonius o Heiliger Antonius, von Dämonen gepeinigt, literalmente traducidos como: La tentación de San Antonio y San Antonio, atormentado por los Demonios) es un grabado realizado el siglo XV por el pintor alemán Martin Schongauer (h.1448-1491). La imagen muestra a San Antonio Abad, quien durante su ascenso a los cielos se ve rodeado de una legión de demonios para evitar que alcance su destino. San Antonio, anciano, ataviado con el hábito de la orden, mira serenamente hacia el espectador, mientras los demonios le sujetan de sus miembros, de su ropaje, y pelo y lo golpean con palos de madera. Los demonios están representados de una manera notable, convincente, de escala realista y con forma animal. Es una obra temprana del autor, pero una de las más influyentes. Según contó Giorgio Vasari (1511-1574) Miguel Ángel (1475-1564), a la edad de trece años hizo una versión en color de este grabado. Además, este grabado ha servido de inspiración en cuadros posteriores sobre el mismo episodio, como La tentación de San Antonio de Jan Brueghel de Velours, donde se muestra la misma escena en parte superior derecha. - The Temptation of St. Anthony is an engraving, probably created c. 1470–75, by Martin Schongauer of this popular scene in 15th-century art. In it, grotesque demons swarm around Saint Anthony the Great, bursting with movement and energy as the saint calmly resists their temptations or blows. St. Anthony is shown with some of his signature attributes, dressed in a monk's religious habit and cowl, carrying a staff with a tau-shaped handle and his bound girdle book hanging from his belt. The literary source from which this image derives is debated. The image could depict chapter 65 from Athanasius's Life of St. Anthony, where the hermit has a vision of himself floating through the air and undefined beings prevent him from ascending back to reality or it could show the ninth chapter of Athanasius's Life of St. Anthony, where St. Anthony is attacked by the devil in the form of animals and beasts in the Egyptian desert and is levitated in the air by his practice of rigorous asceticism. C'est une des estampes les plus spectaculaires, où l'artiste montre tout à la fois sa virtuosité technique et son sens de l'espace, du volume et du mouvement. L'iconographie exacte n'est pas claire et est débattue, mais semble tirée de chapitres de la Vie de saint Antoine d'Athanase d'Alexandrie rédigée au IVe siècle. (fr)
