L’album a été enregistré à cause d’obligations contractuelles, créé sous la pression de Decca Records pour produire un single, et le caractère "sur commande" de sa composition a donné lieu à une sélection de chansons décrites comme "impaires" sur le site officiel du groupe. Contrairement aux précédents albums de Camel, The Single Factor se compose exclusivement de compositions plus courtes d’une durée de 3 à 5 minutes. Le guitariste Andrew Latimer était le seul membre d'origine restant, bien que le claviériste original Peter Bardens soit revenu pour une apparition en tant qu'invité sur 'Sasquatch'. - The Single Factor, released in 1982, is the ninth studio album by English progressive rock band Camel. The album was essentially a contractual obligation album, created under pressure from Decca Records to produce a hit single, and the "made-to-order" nature of its composition resulted in a selection of songs described as "odd" on the band's official website. Unlike previous Camel albums, The Single Factor consists exclusively of shorter compositions around 3 to 5 minutes in length. Guitarist Andrew Latimer was the only original member remaining, although original keyboardist Peter Bardens returned for a guest appearance on 'Sasquatch'. According to the liner notes, original drummer Andy Ward, who had appeared in all previous Camel albums, was now absent "following a serious injury to his hand". In reality the injury was self-inflicted, and years later it was revealed that he was forced to retire due to mental health problems. The album was reissued on 8 September 2009 by Esoteric Recordings with a bonus version of "You Are the One". (en)

- The Single Factor is het negende studioalbum van de Britse muziekgroep Camel. De leider, Andrew Latimer van de band kwam zonder musici zitten na de opname en concertreeks na Nude. Enig ander beginlid Andy Ward had gepoogd zelfdoding te verrichten door zijn polsen door te snijden, maar kon vanwege drugs en alcoholverslaving niet verder. Latimer stelde voor aan hun platenlabel Decca om een sabbatical te nemen om Ward voldoende te laten herstellen en dan met Camel verder te gaan. Decca wilde daar niets van weten en hield Camel aan hun contract, het zou uiteindelijk dan ook op een breuk aankomen. Ward is echter nooit meer helemaal hersteld. In januari 1982 dook Latimer de studio in met een reeks van gelegenheidsmusici, die elders al hun sporen verdiend hadden. Voor de song Sasquatch kwam medeoprichter Peter Bardens even terug om orgel te spelen. Het album werd opgenomen in de Abbey Road Studios gedurende januari en februari 1982. Het vorige album Nude en het volgende Stationary Traveller zijn beide conceptalbums, en daarom viel dit album er een beetje buiten. De tracks Heroes en Heart’s Desire vormen qua muziek de verbinding tussen beide albums, een beetje Nude en een beetje Stationary Traveller. (nl)
