- The Pencil of Nature (literalment en català, "El llapis de la natura") és el primer llibre fotogràfic i il·lustrat de la història, publicat en sis lliuraments entre 1844 i 1846 per William Fox Talbot. El llibre detalla el desenvolupament del calotip per Talbot i inclou 24 impressions fetes per mitjà d'aquest procés. El llibre il·lustra algunes de les possibles aplicacions de la nova tecnologia. Les fotos que en ell es recullen s'empegaven a mà, mètode que anys després li portaria problemes, ja que les imatges van acabar danyades i va haver de retornar els diners a totes les persones que l'havien comprat. - Tužka přírody (anglicky The Pencil of Nature) bylo fotografické dílo Williama Foxe Talbota zveřejněné v šesti (nebo v sedmi) vydáních v letech 1844 až 1846. Byla to vůbec „první fotograficky ilustrovaná kniha, která byla komerčně publikována“ někdy je také označována jako „první komerčně publikovaná kniha ilustrovaná fotografiemi“. Je považována za důležitou a vlivnou práci v dějinách fotografie. Knihu vydala společnost v Londýně, obsahuje popis procesu kalotypie včetně 24 ručně zhotovených kalotypických tisků na slaném papíru. Každý z nich je podlepen silnějším kartonem a slouží k ilustraci některé z možných aplikací nové technologie. Talbot ve své dílně vyrobil celkem 2500 kopií této knihy. Vzhledem k tomu, že fotografie v té době byla ještě velmi mladou novinkou a mnoho lidí nebylo obeznámeno s koncepcí, Talbot cítil potřebu vložit do své knihy také následující informace: Desky v tomto albu jsou vytvořeny působením samotného světla, bez jakékoli pomoci umělcovy tužky. Jsou to obrazy samotného slunce, a ne – jak si někteří lidé představují – napodobující rytiny. Tužka přírody byla vydána a prodávána jako jedna složka bez pevné vazby. Talbot plánoval velký počet vydání, ale kniha neměla velký komerční úspěch a tak musel svůj projekt ukončit po šestém vydání. Při tisku a komerčním prodeji knížky pomáhal asistent a fotograf Nicolaas Henneman původem z Nizozemí. (cs)

El lápiz de la Naturaleza ' fue publicado en seis entregas entre 1844 y 1846 por William Fox Talbot. El libro detalla el desarrollo del calotipo por Talbot e incluye 24 impresiones hechas por medio de este proceso. El libro ilustra algunas de las posibles aplicaciones de la nueva tecnología. Las fotos que en él se recogen se pegaban a mano, método que años después le traería problemas pues las imágenes terminaron dañadas y tuvo que devolver el dinero a todas las personas que lo habían comprado. - The Pencil of Nature is a book by William Henry Fox Talbot which was the first commercially published book to be illustrated with photographs. Published by Longman, Brown, Green & Longmans in six fascicles between 1844 and 1846, the book detailed Talbot's development of the calotype photographic process and included 24 calotype prints, each one pasted in by hand, illustrating some of the possible applications of the new technology. It is regarded as an important and influential work in the history of photography and was described by the Metropolitan Museum of Art as "a milestone in the art of the book greater than any since Gutenberg's invention of moveable type." At the time The Pencil of Nature was published, photography was still an unfamiliar concept for most people—the Athenaeum magazine described Talbot's work as "modern necromancy"—and the book was the first opportunity for the general public to see what photographs looked like. To avoid any confusion, Talbot inserted the following notice into the book: The plates of the present work are impressed by the agency of Light alone, without any aid whatever from the artist's pencil. They are the sun-pictures themselves, and not, as some persons have imagined, engravings in imitation. The cover page for The Pencil of Nature clashed designs, which was characteristic of the Victorian era, with styles inspired by baroque, Celtic, and medieval elements. Its symmetrical design, letterforms, and intricate carpet pages are similar to and a pastiche of the Book of Kells. The Pencil of Nature was published and sold one section at a time, without any binding (as with many books of the time, purchasers were expected to have it bound themselves once all the installments had been released). Talbot planned a large number of installments; however, the book was not a commercial success and he was forced to terminate the project after completing only six. (en)

Scritto da William Henry Fox Talbot e corredato da propri calotipi, realizzati nel Talbotype Manufacturing Establishment, con copertina disegnata da Owen Jones. Si compone di: Osservazioni introduttive, Brevi cenni storici sulla nascita della fotografia e di 24 tavole, calotipi, con relative riflessioni sulle varie applicazioni della fotografia. Il libro fu pubblicato dalla casa editrice Longman, Brown, Green & Longhans di Londra.Talbot introduce il suo libro specificando che le tavole in esso contenute sono state create utilizzando la sola azione della luce su fogli sensibili: «Questa piccola opera che si offre oggi al pubblico è il primo tentativo di pubblicare una serie di tavole o immagini realizzate attraverso la nuova arte del disegno fotogenico, senza il minimo ricorso alla matita dell'artista.» (it)
