- Verlangen (Originaltitel The Passion) ist der zweite Roman der britischen Schriftstellerin Jeanette Winterson. Er erschien 1987 in Großbritannien und 1988 in deutscher Sprache zunächst bei Klett-Cotta und 1993 als Taschenbuch im dtv-Verlag. Die Übersetzung des Romans erfolgte durch Bettina Runge. Der kurze Roman, der im englischen Original nur 160 Seiten lang ist, spielt zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts. Er erzählt das Schicksal Henris, eines jungen französischen Soldaten im Heer Napoleons, und der aus Venedig stammenden Villanelle, deren Lebenswege sich während des Russlandfeldzugs 1812 kreuzen. Die Handlung des Romans weist Elemente von Magischem Realismus auf. Verlangen wurde 1987 mit dem John Llewellyn Rhys Prize ausgezeichnet. Es war der zweite angesehene Literaturpreis für Winterson, nachdem sie bereits 1985 für ihren autobiografisch geprägten Debütroman Orangen sind nicht die einzige Frucht mit dem Whitbread First Novel Award ausgezeichnet worden war. Beide Romane gelten heute als Klassiker der britischen Literatur im 20. The novel won the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize. Publication and subsequent sales of the novel allowed Winterson to stop working other jobs, and support herself as a full-time writer. Though nominally a historical novel, Winterson takes considerable liberties with the depiction of the historical setting and various strategies for interpreting the historical—making the novel historiographic metafiction. The novel also explores themes like passion, constructions of gender and sexuality, and broader themes common to 1980s and 90s British fiction. Parts of the novel are set in Venice—Winterson had yet to visit the city when she wrote about it, instead the depiction was entirely fictional. (en)
