- Die Stiefelgeiss ist eine Gebirgsziege, die auch als Hausziege gehalten wird. Sie stammt ursprünglich aus dem schweizerischen Sarganserland. Die Rasse ist sehr robust, die Milchleistung ist bescheiden. Eine erstmalige Nennung als Rasse erfolgte an der Landwirtschaftsausstellung 1909. Männliche und weibliche Ziegen haben Hörner, die der Böcke (so nennt man männliche Ziegen) sind jedoch dicker und länger. Die Stiefelgeiss wird in der Alpwirtschaft als lebhafte, robuste, nicht auf Milch spezialisierte Gebirgsziege für eine extensive Haltung eingesetzt. Die Stiefelgeiss ist für steile, hoch gelegene Alpen geeignet. Wenn man sie auf einer flachen Weide hält, müssen deswegen ausreichend Klettermöglichkeiten vorhanden sein. (de)
- La chèvre bottée, ou Stiefelgeiss est une race caprine suisse. La chèvre bottée est originaire de l'Oberland saint-Gallois. C'est une chèvre de montagne rustique qui convient aussi bien pour la traite que comme chèvre allaitante. Les robes varient du brun clair et foncé au gris argenté. Cette race de chèvre se caractérise par la présence de jarre sur le dos (manteau) et l'arrière-main (culotte). Selon la coloration des jambes, on la dit « bottée noire » ou « bottée brune ». Le fourrage maigre et les conditions climatiques extrêmes ont façonné une chèvre adaptée aux rudesses de la montagne. La vivacité et l'aptitude à la montagne étaient jadis essentielles. La productivité laitière était d'importance secondaire. La chèvre bottée fut présentée comme race à part pour la première fois à la foire agricole de 1909. La chèvre bottée ne fut toutefois pas reconnue lors de l'apurement des races de 1938. Au début des années 1980, elle avait presque disparu, mais a pu être sauvée in extremis par la fondation Pro Specie Rara. Le profane confond volontiers la chèvre bottée avec la chèvre chamoisée très répandue. La bottée se distingue par son pelage à l'éclat soyeux caractéristique, contrairement à la chamoisée qui a le poil court et luisant. (fr)
- Stiefelgeiss is a breed of domestic mountain goats originating in the highlands of St. Gallen, Switzerland. Their population is currently less than one thousand. Both male and female Stiefelgeiss goats have horns. Their coats range from a light greyish brown to a dark reddish color. The animals are not excessively shaggy, but on the animals' hind end, long beard hairs, called "Mänteli," grow much longer and often are of a different color from the rest of the coat. Some members of the breed display long, beard-like hairs on the chin. Until the 1920s, the goat was actively bred, but by the 1980s, it was nearly extinct. Noting this, the Swiss preservation foundation Pro Specie Rara took an interest in the breed. Now mostly managed by the Booted Goat Breeders Club of Switzerland, the ongoing conservation efforts encourage farmers to keep the goats for their agricultural usefulness, for service as mother nannies, and for meat. While still an endangered population, the recent trend in their numbers has been positive. As of 2001, there were 600 members spread among 87 breeders. They are concentrated in eastern Switzerland, with scattered breeding groups also found in the central and western regions of the country. (en)
