No debe confundirse con el género Mastodon, perteneciente a la familia Mammutidae, los cuales llevan el nombre común de «mastodontes» Tenía una altura de 2,8 metros y un peso de 6 toneladas, con el aspecto de una versión robusta del elefante moderno, del cual, a diferencia de las especies más relacionadas, se asemejaba por tener dos colmillos. Estos colmillos se curvaban hacía arriba y tenían una longitud de 3,5 metros. Su cerebro pesaba alrededor de 5 kg. Los molares de Stegomastodon' se cubrían de esmalte y un patrón complejo de crestas con protuberancias sobre ellas, que le conferían una gran superficie de masticación adecuada para una dieta herbívora. El género se originó en América del Norte y las dos especies suramericanas llegaron durante el Gran Intercambio Americano. Inicialmente herbívoros mixtos, S. waringi evolucionó con una dieta basada en pastos, mientras S. platensis se hizo principalmente folívoro. Las especies de Stegomastodon vivieron en hábitats más cálidos y con altitudes menores al oriente de los Andes, mientras el género relacionado, Cuvieronius, vivió en regiones más frías de mayor altitud. I molari degli Stegomastodon erano ricoperti di smalto, inoltre la loro superficie era ricca di bitorzoli e scanalature, il che creava una vasta superficie masticatoria sul dente: ciò lascia supporre che gli Stegomastodon si nutrissero d'erba.
