- Shortit ist ein selten vorkommendes Mineral aus der Mineralklasse der „Carbonate und Nitrate“ (ehemals Carbonate, Nitrate und Borate). Es kristallisiert im orthorhombischen Kristallsystem mit der Zusammensetzung Na2Ca2[CO3]3, ist also chemisch gesehen ein Natrium-Calcium-Carbonat. Shortit entwickelt tafelige bis kurzprismatische Kristalle von mehreren Millimetern Dicke mit typischerweise hemimorphem, keilförmigem bzw. schneidenartigem Habitus mit glasähnlichem Glanz. In reiner Form ist Shortit farblos und durchsichtig. Durch vielfache Lichtbrechung aufgrund von Gitterbaufehlern oder polykristalliner Ausbildung kann er aber auch weiß erscheinen und durch Fremdbeimengungen eine hellgelbe bis dunkelgelbe Farbe annehmen, wobei die Transparenz entsprechend abnimmt. Shortite is associated with commercial trona ores, and some care must be taken when beneficiating crude trona to avoid contamination with shortite. (en)
