- Shape of Despair es una banda de funeral doom procedente de Helsinki, Finlandia, fundada en 1995 por Jarno Salomaa bajo el nombre de Raven, tres años más tarde cambian su nombre a Shape of Despair, y gracias a su álbum , la banda firma contrato con Spinefarm Records. Hasta el momento la banda ha lanzado al mercado seis álbumes y un disco recopilatorio. Además, cuentan en su haber con la versión Aether en el disco tributo de los pioneros del Funeral Doom Skepticism, llamado Entering the Levitation y editado en 2007 por el sello polaco Foreshadow Music. Entre los meses de octubre y noviembre de 2010 sale un nuevo trabajo Written In My Scars, un EP compuesto por dos temas y editado por (sub-sello de Aftermath Music). En el mes de junio de 2011 es editado un split compartido con la banda portuguesa Before the Rain por Avantgarde Music. Shape of Despair aportan la versión Estrella de la banda de darkwave Lycia. Once años tuvieron que pasar para que Shape of Despair volvieran a grabar un larga duración, Monotony Fields, que salió al mercado el 15 de junio de 2015 a través de Season of Mist. Il sound del gruppo può essere definito come doom lento ed atmosferico, che si sviluppa grazie all'ausilio di chitarre distorte, tastiere, flauti, violini ed una batteria dai toni lentissimi e decadenti. Pur facendo parte della stessa corrente musicale degli Skepticism, si discostano da questi ultimi per sonorità maggiormente sinfoniche e melodiche. Il primo lavoro del gruppo, con il nome attuale, risale al 1998 e fu chiamato semplicemente . Il demo rappresentò anche la prima vera e propria produzione musicale, visto che il precedente Alone in the Mist non fu mai distribuito. Ad oggi gli Shape of Despair hanno prodotto 3 "Full Length" album, una compilation (Shape of Despair) che raccoglie le prime incisioni ed un EP, quest'ultimo nel 2010. Hanno partecipato anche all'album tributo agli Skepticism Entering the Levitation, suonando il brano Aether. Nel 2015 la band annuncia il suo quarto album chiamato "Monotony Fields" dopo 10 anni dalla release precedente. Alla voce ora abbiamo , cantante degli Throes of Dawn, dopo che l'ex cantente Pasi Koskinen lascia la band nel 2010. Il nuovo lavoro degli Shape of Despair viene accolto molto bene dai fan e dalla critica in tutto il mondo, riconfermandosi così una delle band cult del genere funeral doom. Il 22 giugno del 2015, dopo l'uscita del nuovo album, il batterista lascia la band. Il 17 luglio 2020 la band annuncia il ritorno nella line up di Samu Ruotsalainen. Il 25 febbraio 2022 viene pubblicato il quinto full length dal titolo "Return to the Void". (it)
