- Samuel Ullman (* 13. April 1840 in Hechingen; † 21. März 1924 in Birmingham, Alabama) war ein US-amerikanischer Unternehmer, Dichter und Wohltäter. Heute ist vor allem für sein Werk Youth bekannt. Dieses Buch war ein Lieblingsbuch des Generals Douglas MacArthur. Das Werk stand im Bücherregal seines Büros in Tokio, als er von 1945 bis 1951 Supreme Allied Commander in Japan war. Er zitierte häufig aus diesem Buch in seinen Reden, dies führte dazu, dass es in Japan bekannter wurde als in den USA. Ullman wurde als Sohn jüdischer Eltern 1840 in Hechingen, damals Hauptstadt des Fürstentums Hohenzollern-Hechingen, geboren. Im Alter von elf Jahren emigrierte er mit seiner Familie in die Vereinigten Staaten, um der Diskriminierung zu entfliehen. Die Familie zog nach Port Gibson in Mississippi. Nach einer kurzen Zeit in der Armee der Südstaaten kam Ullman nach Natchez in Mississippi. Dort heiratete er, eröffnete ein Geschäft, war Stadtrat und Mitglied des örtlichen Schulrats. Im Jahre 1884 zog Ullman in die noch junge Stadt Birmingham in Alabama und wurde dort unverzüglich in den ersten Schulrat der Stadt berufen. Während seiner achtzehnjährigen Dienstzeit erkämpfte er ähnliche Bildungsrechte für schwarze Kinder wie die der weißen. Zusätzlich zu seinen zahlreichen gemeinnützigen Tätigkeiten diente Ullman auch als Präsident und dann als Rabbi der Reform-Kongregation im Tempel Emanu-El. Häufig umstritten, aber immer respektiert, hinterließ Ullman seine Spuren im religiösen, pädagogischen und gesellschaftlichen Leben von Natchez und Birmingham. Im Ruhestand fand Ullman mehr Zeit für eine seiner bevorzugten Leidenschaften – das Schreiben von Briefen, Essays und Gedichten. Seine Gedichte, Aufsätze und Bücher handeln von Themen wie Liebe, Natur, Religion, Familie, dem eiligen Lebensstil eines Freundes, und „das junge“ Leben. General Douglas MacArthur ist der Erfolg Ullmans hauptsächlich zu verdanken, durch seinen Einfluss entdeckten die Menschen in Japan Youth und begannen, neugierig auf den Autor zu werden. Im Jahr 1924 starb Ullmann in Birmingham. 1994 eröffneten die Alabama State University in Birmingham und die Japanisch-Amerikanische Gesellschaft von Alabama das Samuel Ullman-Museum in Birmingham. He is best known today for his poem "Youth," which was a favorite of General Douglas MacArthur. The poem was on the wall of MacArthur's office in Tokyo when he became Supreme Allied Commander in Japan. In addition, MacArthur often quoted from the poem in his speeches, leading to it becoming better known in Japan than in the United States. Born in 1840 at Hechingen, Hohenzollern, to Jewish parents, at age 11 Ullman immigrated with his family to America in 1851 to escape discrimination. The Ullman family settled in Port Gibson, Mississippi. After briefly serving in the Confederate Army, he became a resident of Natchez, Mississippi. There, Ullman married, started a business, served as a city alderman, and was a member of the local board of education. In 1884, Ullman moved to the young city of Birmingham, Alabama, and was immediately placed on the city's first board of education. During his eighteen years of service, he advocated educational benefits for black children similar to those provided for whites. In addition to his numerous community activities, Ullman also served as president and then lay rabbi of the city's reform congregation at Temple Emanu-El. Often controversial but always respected, Ullman left his mark on the religious, educational, and community life of Natchez and Birmingham. In his retirement, Ullman found more time for one of his favorite passions: writing letters, essays and poetry. His poems and poetic essays cover subjects as varied as love, nature, religion, family, the hurried lifestyle of a friend, and living "young." It was General Douglas MacArthur who facilitated Ullman's popularity as a poet — he hung a framed copy of a version of Ullman's poem "Youth" on the wall of his office in Tokyo and often quoted from the poem in his speeches. Through MacArthur's influence, the people of Japan discovered "Youth" and became curious about the poem's author. In 1924, Ullman died at the age of 83 in Birmingham, Alabama. In 1994, the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the Japan-America Society of Alabama opened the Samuel Ullman Museum in Birmingham's Southside neighborhood. The museum is located in the former Ullman residence and is operated by the University of Alabama at Birmingham. (en)
