- Sam Abell (* 19. Februar 1945 in Sylvania, Ohio) ist ein US-amerikanischer Fotograf und lebt heute in Virginia. Sam Abell lernte sein Handwerk beim Vater, der auch schon Fotograf war und schloss die Ausbildung an der University of Kentucky 1969 mit einem Bachelor Titel ab. Er arbeitete seit 1970 unter anderem für die Zeitschrift „National Geographic Society“ und hat bisher über 20 Reportagen über diverse Themen, wie verschiedene Kulturen und Landschaften, gestaltet. 1990 erschien Abell’s Buch „Stay this moment“ das Eastman-Kodak mit veröffentlichte. In den letzten Jahren veröffentlichte Sam Abell noch weitere 5 Bücher zu den Themengebieten wie Bürgerkrieg, Gärten, über den Westen der USA, über Irland und die Westküste von Australien. Abell benutzt häufig die Totale mit einem Weitwinkelobjektiv. Seine Bilder zeigen den Menschen in seiner Umwelt und sein Umgang mit ihr. Ein Interessensgebiet ist der sozialkritische Blick, dies besonders mit eindrücklichen Porträt Aufnahmen. Eine herausragende Arbeit ist eine Reportage über die Inselgruppe „Neu Hybriden“, entstanden 1973. (de)

Sam Abell's love of photography began due to the influence of his father who was a geography teacher who ran a photography club. In his book The Photographic Life, Abell mentions a photograph he made while on an outing with his father, a photograph that subsequently won a small prize in a photo contest. He credits that prize as being a major influence on the direction his life would take. Abell was the photographer and co-editor for his high school yearbook and newspaper. Abell graduated from the University of Kentucky in Lexington where he majored in English, minored in Journalism, and was the editor of the Kentuckian Yearbook. He is also a teacher, an artist and an author. Abell received an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from the University of Toledo in 2009. Sam Abell's book The Life of a Photograph is one of three volumes begun in 2000 with Seeing Gardens. It was followed in 2002 with The Photographic Life. (en)
