Il utilise principalement la norme CAN 2.0 B comportant des identifiants de message codés sur 29 bits. Ce protocole spécifie l'utilisation du CAN sur les diverses couches du modèle OSI (3 à 7). Ses applications sont diverses, mais sont principalement dans les marchés du camion, et des véhicules lourds ou spéciaux. - Society of Automotive Engineers standard SAE J1939 is the vehicle bus recommended practice used for communication and diagnostics among vehicle components. Originating in the car and heavy-duty truck industry in the United States, it is now widely used in other parts of the world. SAE J1939 is used in the commercial vehicle area for connection and communication throughout the vehicle, with the physical layer defined in ISO 11898. A different physical layer is used between the tractor and trailer, specified in ISO 11992. (en)

- J1939 — стандарт коммуникационной и диагностической сети для различных машин. Изначально был разработан в США для грузовиков. Данный стандарт является коммерческой разработкой, поэтому мало распространён. Сеть, созданная на основе J1939, в качестве канального уровня использует коммуникационную шину CAN стандарта CAN 2.0b. Используются только расширенные идентификаторы (29 бит). В настоящее время находит широкое применение в сельскохозяйственной технике, автобусах, грузовых автомобилях.
