The Rover T16 engine was a 2.0 L; 121.7 cu in (1,994 cc) fuel injected DOHC inline-four petrol engine produced by Rover from 1992 to 1999. It has a bore and a stroke of 84.45 mm × 89 mm (3.325 in × 3.504 in). It is a development of the M series (M16), which was in turn a development of the O series, which dated back to the BMC B-series engine as found in the MG B and many others. Several variants were produced for various models, but all had the same displacement. Jednalo se o vývojový model z řady (M16), což byl nástupce řady , která byla vyvinuta z motoru , který se využíval k pohonu automobilů MG B a mnoha dalších. Bylo vyrobeno několik variant pro různé modely, ale všechny měly stejné parametry. Atmosféricky plněná varianta dosahovala výkonu 136 koní (101 kW) a varianty s přeplňováním byly k dispozici s výkonem 180 a 200 koní (134 a 149 kW). Zatímco motor sám o sobě je schopen velkého výkonu, jeho omezujícím faktorem byla převodovka PG1 od firmy Powertrain Ltd. Ta totiž nedokázala zvládnout vyšší točivý moment a v důsledku toho je motor na výstupu elektronicky omezen na nižší točivý moment, než kterého by byl schopen, což dává motoru velmi „plochou“ celkovou křivku točivého momentu.
