- Ronald C. Davidson (* 3. Juli 1941 in , Ontario; † 19. Mai 2016 in Cranbury, New Jersey) war ein kanadischer Physiker, der sich mit Plasmaphysik beschäftigte. Davidson studierte an der McMaster University (Bachelorabschluss 1963) und promovierte 1966 an der Princeton University. Als Post-Doc war er 1966 bis 1968 an der University of California, Berkeley und ab 1968 Assistant Professor an der University of Maryland. 1972 wurde er dort Associate Professor und 1973 Professor. 1970 erhielt er ein Forschungsstipendium der Alfred P. Sloan Foundation (Sloan Research Fellowship). Ab 1978 war er Professor am Massachusetts Institute of Technology am Plasma Fusion Center, dessen Direktor er 1978 bis 1988 war. Seit 1991 war er Professor für Astrophysik an der Princeton University und 1991 bis 1996 Direktor des dortigen Plasma Physics Laboratory. 1982 bis 1986 war er Vorstand des Magnetic Fusion Advisory Committee des US Department of Energy (DOE) und 1982 bis 1983 Vorstand der Abteilung Plasmaphysik der American Physical Society. 2008 erhielt er den James-Clerk-Maxwell-Preis für Plasmaphysik für grundlegende Beiträge zur Physik nicht-neutraler Plasmen, Teilchenstrahlen hoher Intensität und kollektiven nichtlinearen Wechselwirkungsprozessen in Plasmen bei hoher Temperatur. Er war der Autor und Ko-Autor von über 350 wissenschaftlichen Zeitschriftenveröffentlichungen. Insbesondere befasste er sich mit nicht-neutralen Plasmen (das heißt die Gesamtladung verschwindet nicht), wie sie etwa in Teilchenstrahlen bei Hochenergiestreuexperimenten in der Elementarteilchenphysik auftreten. - Ronald Crosby Davidson (3 July 1941 – 19 May 2016) was a Canadian physicist, professor, and scientific administrator who worked in the United States. He served as the first director of the MIT Plasma Science and Fusion Center from 1978 to 1988, and as director of the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory from 1991 to 1996. He had been Professor of Astrophysical Sciences at Princeton University since 1991. Davidson was born in Norwich, Ontario, Canada, and received his bachelor's degree from McMaster University in 1963, and his doctorate in physics from Princeton University in 1966. As a postdoctoral researcher, he was at the University of California, Berkeley from 1966 to 1968. In 1968, he went to work teaching at the University of Maryland where he became a full professor in 1972. In 1978, he moved to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he taught until 1991. Davidson was a fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He received the Leadership Award from Fusion Power Associates in 1986 and the 2005 IEEE Particle Accelerator Science and Technology Award. In 2008, Davidson received the James Clerk Maxwell Prize for Plasma Physics for "pioneering contributions to the physics of one-component non-neutral plasmas, intense charge particle beams, and collective nonlinear interaction processes in high-temperature plasmas." A resident of Cranbury, New Jersey, Davidson died on May 19, 2016, at his home. (en)
